Default Headaches / Migraines

Hi,
I've been getting what my Dr calls "atypical migraines" for several years. I'm male, 38 yrs old. I've been getting these terrible headaches about twice a week since the mid 90's.
The only meds that work are the triptan medicines like Relpax, Maxalt, etc. And they only work about 50% of the time.
I was recently laid off from work, so I'll lose my health insurance benefit. I can't afford to buy Maxalt with cash, it's far too expensive. (About $20-25 a pill, or more).
Excedrin doesnt work for me, nor aspirin, or anything I've tried over the counter.
Vicodin does not work for my headaches either, neither does Percocet.

Any headache sufferers out there with any suggestions? I'm in need of something new to try, something that I can get in a cheaper generic version.

thanks

Hello! I'm a long time migraineur myself. As someone who lost my job as a result of migraines (and with it my insurance), I certainly feel your pain about losing that coverage.

There are a few other treatment options that might be worth considering. There is an older medication called Midrin (available in generic) that might work for you. You also might want to consider butalbital compounds (such as Fiorcet, Fiorinal, Esgic, Medigesic, etc.) or ergotamines (such as Cafergot or Migranal).

You might also consider preventative medication since you are having such frequent migraines. Some people are able to find an option that is quite effective for them through trial and error. Some, though not all, of the most popular options are available in generic, too.

Thanks,
I've heard some good things about fiorinal and fioricet, and did some searches online. I'll ask my Dr for a script, or just buy it online to try it out.
I may try cafergot and some of the others you suggested. I think you're right, its just trial and error, and a matter of finding what works for me.
Hopefully there is an affordable med somewhere out there that will at least take some of the edge off.

I understand what you mean when you said you lost your job because of it. Myself, I ALMOST lost my job. In fact, I got a kind warning. They knew it wasnt my fault and can't be helped sometimes. but when you have a migraine, you cannot work. I'm disfunctional when I have a headache and can't do my job until it passes.
