Default Fiorinal makes me better

I cannot beleive that I am on this site, but I am conceerned. I take Fiorinal with codiene every day (whenever I have a script). One to two a day. A lot of times, I tell myself that I'm not going to take one, but then by the early afternoon, I go ahead and take one. Usually just one a day. Anyways, it makes me a better mother, wife etc. When I take one, I have a great attitude, nicer to the kids, laid back, clean house, cook dinner, better relationship with husband, better sex, I listen better, do my schoolwork better, more importantly, I am content with staying home all day and not having friends or anything because my husband takes the car. If I take a pill, I am okay to stay home with the kids all day without having anyone to talk to.

When I don't take it however, I am irritable. VERY VERY irritable! Mean, nasty, rude, name calling, no motivation, angry... above all, I would say incredibly ANXIOUS! I have anxiety problems (severe) actually I have Obsessive complusive disorder. I obseses over the smallest things untill I get terrible headaches. I'm not on any anti anxiety drug although I feel that i should be. I don't know if it's my anxiety issues or if I have a problem with the pills. Do they make everyone "better"?

I've tried Fioricet with Codeine (which is basically the same thing you're taking) and it made me feel GREAT...talkative, excited, happy, and very open. I also have serious anxiety problems, and opiates are some of the best medicine against it. The caffeine + codeine combination in Fiorinal/Fioricet is what gives you the kick, and the butalbital is what keeps you relaxed (it's a barbituate, and it depresses your central nervous system). I also know how irritable someone can be whenever they dont take medicine...I used to take tramadol for migraines, and sometimes after it would wear off I'd be VERY irritable, I'd snap at people, I'd get pissed over the littlest things, I'd be very short with people, and so on. It's just your body getting used to the Fiorinal and when you don't take it, the irritability is your body's way of telling you "Feed me Fiorinal!". Unfortunalely Fioricet/Fiorinal w/Codeine can be addictive, bc of the Codeine, and its classified as a Schedule III drug, the same class as Vicodin and Tylenol 3.

Of course fiorinal with codeine makes you feel euphoric it's a barbituate and an opiate. You are in the throws of addiction and you need to take care of it.Believe me you won't feel like a better person, better mom better wife forever as this stuff will take you to levels of depression you haven't even thought about. If you can get off it now you will probably be ok but if you continue get ready for a rotten time period in your life. You really need to educate yourself on what your taking because you have no idea what your headed for. Please read up on it and get off this **** as soon as you can.....Dave

Actually Dave, you'll be glad to know that I'm clean now, going on about 7 weeks now. I spent part of last fall and most of earlier this year as a serious hydrocodone addict. But then things changed, I got a new job and a new location, and thank the Good Lord the move helped me change my life around and get clean. Trust me, it was VERY rough there for about 2 weeks, but I did anything I could to get my mind off it....played ALOT of video games, read alot, spent alot of time working out, but case in point is that I got thru it.

Mellyjane,
A lot of the responses to your note focus on the small amount of codiene in Fiorinal + codeine. That's not what is making you feel "better". Although opiates do have euphoria as a side effect for many of us, in THIS instance, it is the butalbital, a barbiturate, that makes you feel happy and well. I have been there, as it worked amazingly well on my headaches (as well as my sparkling wit and personality)..alas, I eventually became very addicted to it (amongst a few other things. I'm pathetically addictive). You also are having "rebound" headaches, H.A.'s that return everyday when you don't take your drug. (This can be seen with caffeine too) You are so lucky that you are only at 1-2 pills a day. It was very hard to stop this, and indeed, you should not without medical supervision as barbiturate withdrawal can lead to seizures. The chances of this occuring on 1-2 a day might be slim, but I wouldn't want to take that chance. I didn't want to hear any of this either.

Its scientifically
proven that medications can affect people differently. It is also well known
that almost any drug can be abused. In the hands of responsible people all
medications can be benificial. Its foolish to allow a drug abuser suggest what
medications are ok to take.

Go see a Doctor. You're obviously in need of some help with your anxiety and anger. There are scores of medications that are tailored for certain indications that you have. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment to go see a Dr. who will probably give you a prescription for an ant-anxiety med. You're under no obligation to do what he says , but you definitely need some help. There's no shame in that. It's an insane world, they're not gonna zombie you out, just give you a medication to help you cope. These are my opinions only, just trying to give you some friendly advice. Take CARE of yourself and God Bless you to make the right decision in seeing a Doctor.

Default I hear you!!

Melly- Are you still out there?? I know this post is almost a year old, but I just saw it. I'm not on this drug now, but I used to be. It did the exact same thing to me. Weird, because it has a barbituate in it and they're supposed to slow you down, but I felt speeded up and much more focused and motivated on the drug. My dad still takes it and it does the same thing to him. Weird.

Smile Be carefull w/ Fiorinal3

Hey. Fiorinal 3 is a great pain reliever for migrains....probobly the best, but it is very addictive. If you get to where you take alot, it is very sedating and will alter your personality like you are drunk. It is wonderful in moderation if you only take it when you absolutely have to for pain, but the longer and more often you take it......the greater the amount you have to take to relieve the pain. Before you know it, it takes 3 to give you the same relief that 1 used to take care of. Take with great caution and care. I started years ago taking 1 or 2 a day and it was a miracle drug. It stopped my pain like nothing had ever even come close to. The disapointing thing was when I had to take more and more to get relief. Try to switch back and forth with plain Fiorinal that doesn't have codien. (or something else that works for you)
Good luck and God bless

Default does anyone have advice on how to not get hooked?

I am taking fiorinal and dilaudid. I am going through a pain management specialist. I have a serious condition but it is taking this strong combination finally to get the pain under control. Until and if I have surgery, which is in my neck so I am leery, and until and if these other treatments work... (I have a compressed spine causing serious neck pain and severe daily migraines)... I will be taking these medications. I have never been in a situation like this before. I am 33 and admit I do now understand the euphoric feelings everyone always talked about. Is that what people are addicted to? or is there a more physical part to it? Since I am working with a pain management doctor, will he ween me off or something and maybe I won't have to go through the withdrawal symptoms? I am just concerned. Does anyone know how to take these medications responsibly without getting hooked. I am taking about 4 fiorinal w/ codein a day and 4 dilaudid 2mg tabs a day. along with 50 mg topamax twice a day and 1/2 tab of 350mg soma as needed for spasms (about once or twice a week- irregular).
