Default Back pain

About 9 years ago i had a L5-S1 diskottomey it did not work, I had to go for a re-do. All this time I was put on percs, I started 3 aday up to about a month ago I was eating about 10 a day plus 3-40 of oxy's. On the 23 of August I started the Thomas Recipe, it has been 30 days now drug free, the fog has lifted I sleep fine, energy has come back. I have no need or want to take another pill, with the excemption of one problem. My back is killing me, when I walk a certian distance the pain is so bad that it accutally makes me feel sick. I am being sent for an MRI unforturatly I'am claustrophobic, but the pain has gotten so bad that I do not care anymore, I have to do this. What I'am asking if anyone has ever gone through this and what did they do for the back pain if anything non narc. as I really have no want or need for these pills anymore. I believe they cause me more harm then help. I have a friend at a good hospital pain clinic, that I will go and see tomorrow. To see if there is anything that can be done for my back, if not I will go back on these pills but it will be until the day that I die. Because I will not go through these withdrawals and bull ******************** again.

Hi brian .. I have had all kinds of ongoing back problems going back to years of sports, deg disc disease and what not. Even after stopping the pills I continued to have back problems for a long time. It has hurt a LOT over the last ten days of cleaning up after the hurricane. But I haven't taken a pain pill. That is a miracle for me as I have surely wanted some and they are all around me. I think I would have relapsed during the last ten days of Hurricane Ike if I was going to. But I had to do lots of stretching exercises brian and start working out some. That pain wouldn't just go away for me at least. I had to work at it. Exercise is the very best thing in most instances for back pain. Just have to start slow and watch the kinds of exercise we do. I sure hope you are able to do this without going back on the pills. I know how difficult stopping was for you. Hang in there. God bless.

Of course I had a niice Birthday pumkin, I got spoiled rotten as usual from the love of my life. Now I have a question for Robert, It has been over a month since I stopped the narc's. I still have the runny nose , watery eyes and sneezing, and my legs get very sore at work with the walking. Is this one of those things that is going to take time? I'am going to start an exerise regim, I was just wondering if this is the kind of caca I have to put up with, for the next 2 or 3 months?

Hi Brian. It's very cool that you have over a month clean now. That was an earned month I think. No gimme there!

Brian when I came off oxy I was literally in a wheelchair and walker. So I am not a good representation of what happens when we clean up. I went from the wheelchair to racquetball and that is not at all typical although I am not complaining.

I have seen symptoms like yours even at a month with methadone and I saw it with people like myself who had used heavily for many years. It seems like it seriously took six months when I detoxed. I was in the hospital for almost three months straight including the time spent also recovering from benzo/oxy seizures. I was a mess. So yes symptoms you described including leg pain can easily go on longer for some than for others of us.

The exercise will help you a lot in getting better more quickly. I started working out too. Did a lot of leg weight training. Just don't go tooooo hard like I did. Seemed like I nearly tore up my legs as the knees were no good anyway. Trying to do stupid amounts of weight. But it felt good. If you work out good the symptoms you describe should disappear almost immediately I would think. If you were to just lay around it could easily take a couple months to notice a difference if the symptoms were severe I would think. But you won't have to worry about that as you won't be lying around. Good luck.

Hello Robert, I do alot of walking and the symptoms I talk about are very severe. Sometimes I have to hide for an hour just to rest, because my legs and feet are killing me along with the pain in my back. My back I know I have to go for the MRI which I will prolong as much as posible do to my claustrophobia I'am just hoping that this is withdrawal's and that it will go away. Oh I also have nerve damage down my right leg from the operations, I can not even run, that's what a dog is for. Any ideals what I might try, other than the fact that I'am thinking of joining a gym.

Brian ... It's really hard to say what the real problem is. But the pain sounds pretty severe to me to be w/ds. Hopefully you can work it out with exercise. Thats the best thing I know to do. The MRI will tell you if it's something you are going to have to deal with. Hopefully that won't be the case and the gym will do it. I think that is your best bet. The nerve damage can probably be handled just fine with lyrica (non-narcotic) if it doesn't get better with exercise. Lyrica is the best medication around for nerve-related pain. It's used a lot in the US anyway. Surely they would use it in Canada too.
