| | 11 days off Oxy, now to kill my last vice Hey guys,
I wanted to say thanks so much to those who reached out to me recently! Thanks to your support, I am now 11 days clean from Oxy. While I realize I will have to use it at times, I am relinquishing the pills to someone else. I will only ask for one when my pain is too great to do anything else.
Now, I want to quit smoking. I have just smoked my last cigarette, and I informed my family that I am quitting starting tomorrow. Once I quit smoking, I will be completely clean and sober for the first time in over a decade. I am only in my mid 20s, so that's a big thing for me.
I will probably be on here quite a bit as the cravings start to hit. I hope no one minds |

| | Hi! I am happy that you are off the oxys, but why are you resigning yourself to still needed them even if only on occasion? I'm not judging you bc I don't know your circumstances, but if you're an addict, should you g@mble with taking them on occasion? Even if someone is holding them for you, if you relapse you know you can get them from somewhere else. Like I said, I don't know your circumstances, but can't you get into some kind of pain management program to prevent a relapse from happening? Besides, even though you've been off the pills 11 days, that's still not enough time for your brain to start back producing the normal amount of endorphins to act as natural pain killers. Give it some time before you start taking them occasionally. You may find that the pills were causing you more pain than anything else. I mean this with all due respect.
As for quitting smoking, that's great! You will start feeling so much better! |

| | ainteasy,
Day 11 is wonderful for me. At around day 7 the cravings hit hard for some reason. The mental part was worse than the physical for me. Now, I don't really crave them to be honest. I am living my life happier than I ever was on the pills.
Melinda,
Thanks so much for your support! I have quit several times for different surgeries, but I always picked them right back up. Even after tonsillectomy, LOL! Tonight, I burned every last bit of cigarette that was in the ashtray so I can't get desperate and start smoking bits and pieces (yes, I have sunk that low before). I am so tired of always having to worry about the cigarettes, and I am out of work now. I need to spare the expense even though I enjoy it as well.
hadenough,
Don't feel bad about asking questions. I am a chronic pain patient diagnosed with a condition called RSD. It ranks higher on the pain scale than cancer pain, and many commit suicide as a result. Most days I can manage without anything. However, there are flares that feel like someone is sticking me into a fryer (like for french fries). The only way to make the pain stop is to take the narcotics. I definitely do not need to take them every day though. I was so bad I was going through a month prescription in 2 wks at the most. So, I will give them to someone else to hold. They know the signs of real pain vs what the addict would say or do. It's the only safe way I see.
Thank you so much for all of the responses. It's almost 11pm here, so I am going to try to go to bed. In a way, I hope getting off of the cigarettes will help get rid of the sleeping problems from coming off of the Oxy. I will check in tomorrow, though |

| | Hi anotheraddic
the last time I quit smoking I used chantix...That was to easy some people don't like it but for me it was heaven sent...
my other trick was to take bottled water when I was craving a smoke and drink as much as I could for some reason that took the craving away...
keep me posted on how it goes...
I also had a bad oxycontin habbit...I loved to smoke when I was taking those...
I'm so glad that's all over...
now I can run a mile a day and before I quit It was hard to do 2 minutes on the treadmill...
your doing great...

| | Melinda,
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. I never thought I would get off the oxy, but after doing that I want to kick the habit, too. I thought about chantix, but don't have health insurance right now. I will try the bottled water thing, though.
Once I get rid of the cigs, I am going to take the money that I wasted on pills/cigs and get a gym membership. I love working out, but the drugs stole it from me. That's why I am more determined than ever to get completely clean. I may have to take the pills once a month or so, but I would like to think I can still be "in recovery". |

Oh no doubt.. the mental is the worst part for me too.. Today was the first day since I quit that I actually craved some tramadol but I just know that it's not worth it.. that would be the stupidest thing i've ever done. I'm going to a friends house tomorrow to help him thru his withdrawals.. He's starting on day 1 of NOTHING..., coming off of about 30 vicodin a day!!! for years.. he's gonna be hatin' life. is there any natural remedies for withdrawal anyone?? he's gone thru this probably like 50 times but you know how us addicts are.. we can't really talk with experience unless we have been thru this many times.
anyway, please let me know of some natural remedies besides excercise.. I don't think he's going to wanna do that on day 1.
thanks
John

| | Melinda,
Thanks for checking in I passed the 24 hour mark just a bit ago. So far so good as I haven't had to leave my house. I used to routinely not smoke when I had a day off work or whatever. The real hard part will be driving, but I am avoiding that for as long as I can.
It helps that a "friend" of sorts is coming to stay in the area for a month or so. He doesn't approve of smoking, and I told him a long time ago I quit. I did quit then, but went back to it. This will be the first time seeing him in around a year and a half thanks to the Military. If there's ever going to be a chance for anything to happen, I have to not smoke while he is here. That's not the reason I am quitting, though. I could very easily not smoke around him as I have done previously. I just want to be done with it, and that gives me a bit of an incentive. |

| | Hi anotheraddict
That is really funny about the guy coming that doesn't like cigarette smoke.
My B-friend hates cigarette smoke... So it helps me stay away from them...
What ever it takes to get us not to smoke right
I use to run around with one of those plastic coffee stirrers in my mouth chewing on it...
your doing great...hope your proud of yourself...

| | Just checking in.
It's been 40 hours now. So far, no cravings really. I mean mentally, I want to smoke since it's become such a part of my routine...but I am not physically ailing in any way. I hope it stays this way as I want to be available as much as possible for the next month while my friend is visiting. |

| | Thank you, Melinda! Your encouragement really has helped a lot I used to take voice class in school, so I know all about the breathing...just forgot. I can actually use that method to get some of my air capacity back and get back into singing. Luckily, my voice didn't change as a result of so much smoking |

Thank you for the encouragement. I am determined to beat this thing for one last time |

| | Well, at least I made you laugh. The cigs are definitely harder to quit than the Oxy's were...at least then I couldn't just walk into a store and buy them. Maybe I will try to look into Chantix after all. I have been smoking since I was 12, and the driving always seems to get me. I guess because the whole time I have been driving I have been a smoker. |

I smoked my first cigarette in the 3rd grade...I can remember sneaking in the bushes...That should tell you what kind of kid I was...LOL
just start over...you will make it...just don't give up...
I just called my doctor and told her to call me in a script for chantix.
It cost around a 100.00 dollars...but that doesn't buy to many packs of smokes these days...

| | It's funny how you can see right through the excuses I don't even realize I am using to try to justify this ********! The new pack of cigs will be gone today, and I will start over If I don't succeed this time, I will call the doctor...still want to give it one more shot. I am not telling my family this time, though. It brought on more pressure than me just not smoking on my own. They don't ask when I cut back because they don't want to make me smoke more.... | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
