Does anybody know if there are side effects from taking Xanax for extended periods of time? My doctor has had me on this stuff for 6-7 years (daily), and I want to know if besides being addictive, if it could be hurting me in some way.
Any input would be great.

During the long time you have been on Xanax, have you increased the dose? Does it still work for you? I was told the worse thing is needing more to do the same job. If you are still getting relief on the same dose, the only thing negative is that it's really hard to give it up.

I was prescribed xanax 1mg three times a day for several months. When my doctor retired, I did indeed "miss" having them. Sleep was all but impossible and my mood swings almost cost me a divorce. I suggest you get professional help to get off of this med if you do not want to continue it. Good luck!
