Potency and effectiveness are not the same thing - potency relates to how small or large a dose is required to get the maximal effect - but that only means to the max for that drug. Not all drugs will have a 100% maximal effect. The benzo's are different in maximal effect possable and different in potency. The easiest way to compare is potency. When you compare potency you compare the size of the dose required to attain the effect. On the chart at the link below you will see that the drugs are compared to a 5mg dose of Valium (Diazepam) - all of the drugs that are more potent will require less than 5mg to have an equivalent effect. That comparison (potency) will not address other issues like, time to onset, halflife, term of activity etc. The question you ask is more complicated than it might initially seem but a comparison of potency is a good place to start. See the following chart:

How do these drugs differ from anti d's. Not trying to hyjack the thread just putting in a question of my own!

I remember I tried valium just for fun and it never had any affect on me..

Benzos are not anti depressants - they are also not usefull for prolonged therapy so they are not commonly used to treat any chronic conditions. Benzos increase the acivity of the GABA receptors in the brain (GABA is an inhibitory neuro transmitter) so they allow the normal inhibitor to more effectively inhibit brain actiivity. The body does adjust to this over prolonged administration. I cannot imagine that any doctor will use that class for prolonged therap for depression as they are predominantly used for anxiolytic treatment (to stop anxiety) short term while someone is acutely ill. Anti depressants operate by increasing the synaptic levels of the neurotransmitters that make you happy - increasing seratonin or seratonin adn norepinephrine for mixedactivity drugs like effexor.
Hope that helps

It may help you for a little while but believe me it'll do more harm than good. I got post natal depression with insomnia and bad anxiety attacks after i had my second daughter. I tried just about every anti-d on the market and none of them worked for me at all, one even gave me suicidal thoughts. Thats when i changed doctors and went to one who was rumored to give you what ever you ask for (the worse doctors in the world). She started me on valium, which put me in a nice hazy place. They started wearing off becoz your body gets used to them, so after up-ing my dose with every visit giving me around 100 valium tabs a week sometimes more...she introduced me to the world of xanax...2 years later, after 3 stints in rehab, 2 in hospital and once my partner of 10 years left me becoz i was just a shell of the person i used to be, my parents (god love em!) came to town, picked up me and my kids and took us to their house and kept me under lock and key for 3 months straight. If it wasn't for them i would have lost my kids and i'd be dead now. Benzo's are the hardest thing to get off of YOU HAVE NO IDEA! It changed me so much that if someone had offered to take my kids for a few weeks i probably would've let them just so i could pig out for a while. THAT IS NOT THE SORT OF MOTHER I AM!! Thats how much you will loose yourself if you rely on benzo's to get through the day. If you do need to take them please please please stick to the recommended dose and you can only take them for a short amount of time. 2 months max or anymore and you'll be where i was, if i could stop just one person from having to go thru the hell i did of getting off those wicked things then it'll be worth it. It took me over a year to survive without them and now i've picked up a codiene habit becoz my body still wants to dive for the pills. If i could get my hands on benzo's again i'd be lost forever. Please think about what i've said, your worth more than that.
Shontelle xx

Default Benzo's

Benzo's work well for sleep, and they do calm your nerves. Just don't use them during the day as they will make you drowsy.
I use Zoloft for depression and anxiety, they work wonders for me. I have a frind that uses Effexor and he swears by them. He used to get terrible back pains and the doc's all told him there was nothing wrong with him Since he started using the Effexor, his back pain dissapeared, I guess it was mostly his nerves and that helped him a lot,
i hope that was of some help to you. Good luck.

Zack

If by strongest you mean which benzodiazepine is most psychoactive by mass, then I believe the answer is Triazolam (Halcion).

Standard dosages in pills is .125mg and .25mg.
I have had both - they're quite potent.

According to wikipedia doses exceeding .5mg are unsafe... Not sure how true that is, as benzodiazipines are generally very safe by themselves, and I personally have taken more than that...

No matter, you have your answer on potency.

Now, that aside, Alprazolam (Xanax) is the strongest commonly seen agent, and the best for combating anxiety.

Lorazepam (Ativan) is strong, but doesn't do much for my anxiety, and is definitely worse than alprazolam in terms of Antereograde amnesia. When I first started taking Ativan, I literally lost a week of my life.

Clonazepam (Klonopin) is alot of fun, and honestly, I've only ever taken it recreationally. It's prescribed primarily as an anti-convulsant/for insomnia, I believe, and isn't widely used for anxiety anymore, as far as I know. I'm not a doctor, though, so don't take my word as gospel. Very fun benzo.

Diazepam (Valium) is the original, and in my mind really fits the bill as such. Doesn't help my anxiety at all. Lingers for a long time (half life is something like 50hrs), and honestly doesn't even give me somnelence - not to say that I have trouble sleeping on a good dose. I don't use it cause it doesn't achieve the medical goals I need - by that I mean I don't find it to be potenetly anxiolytic.
