Phenformin Hydrochloride is an oral hypoglycemic agent used for the treatment of diabetes. Phenformin is no longer available in the United States because of a high incidence of fatal lactic acidosis associated with its use.

Although phenformin has been removed from the market because of the potential for adverse effects, it is available for selected patients and supplies of phenformin are available to practicing physicians from the FDA under an IND exemption.
