Default Wellbutrin help!

I need some advice- I hope I dont sound like a complete idiot, but here is my dilemma. Hoping some of you knowledgable folks can help.

I am on Wellbutrin XL and have been for 5 weeks. My doctor put me on 150 mg, once a day. I was having trouble sleeping (as usual) so she upped my dose to 300 mg. I thought it was strange as al the info I have read says Wellbutrin can cause nervousness and insomnia.

Anyway, I saw a different Dr and he said no way, lower my dose back to 150 mg and he gave me sleep meds.

The first Dr had given me a whole bunch of samples of the 300 mg because we dont have a drug plan yet. When the 2nd Dr cut my dose inhalf, I didnt get a new prescription, I thought I would be smart and thrifty and just cut the 300 mg in half instead of buying the 150 mgs. Does this make sense so far?

About 2 hrs after doing this, I started vomiting violently and have been in bed all day, except to get some air outside. I pretty much have to crawl or I am so dizzy and ill.

I thought I had some sort of bug or weird side effect, but then I remember eading someone's post last week about chewing his pills. I remember that on the Wellbutrin info package, it stated to NOT chew or crush them.

Is this why I reacted so horribly?? If so, When will this wear off? I havent eaten much today and feel ********************py, but not as bad as earlier.

Any info??

Hi Irisheyes: You reacted badly because you took to much drug. When you cut the wellbutrin XL in half it released all the drug at once. That drug is an XL which means extended release. So you got a whooper amount and that is why you got so ill.Don't ever break, crush or chew a sustained release pill.Good luck.....Dave

Thanks Dave- I also did an internet search late last night and found out. ugh. Why did I not think cutting it in half was the same as chewing it?? I am feeling much better this morning although pretty weak.

I had really heavy heart palpitations and was so cold all night and was pretty worried. No wonder so many people have trouble with mediactions. I made a stupid mindless mistake that I wont do again. You live and learn I guess.

Well the main thing is you're alright and that's good news. This sort of thing happens all to often. I think we tend to take meds for granted and figure that if the doctor order it then it can't or shouldn't hurt me. We all have done what you did with pretty much the same results lol.Like I said "the main thing is you're alright and that's what really matters".Good luck......Dave
