I don't know what ES stands for - I've never seen ES written out.
ES could be Extra-Strength like Lefty said. And there is also Vicodin HP. What's that - maybe "high potency"? These brand names elude me. And Abbott uses something called "Abbo-Code" to identify its pills. So ES and HP could mean anything (company secret??).
I did read that Vicodin got its name because
hydrocodone is supposed to be 6 times stronger than
codeine - hence, VI (Roman numerals for "6") and "codin" for codeine. Myth or fact??
But ES is not extended-release. As far as I know, there is no extended-release hydrocodone/APAP combination on the market.
