Hello - I would really appreciate a response to my question from a medical person or a pharmacist, if possible. My son, who was 25-years-old at the time he saw my own psychiatrist for a "crisis-intervention" session, was given a prescription for
Klonopin, even though the psychiatrist knew that he was an active alcoholic. My son, unfortunately, proceeded to go home and start drinking, and as he was intoxicated, took about five times the dose of Klonopin that he was supposed to take. We were very fortunate in that he was OK after this horror-incident.
My question is: I am wondering whether to return to my psychiatrist, feeling that it may have been a huge mistake to prescribe Klonopin to an active alcoholic. I know that Klonopin is used in in-patient detox programs, but is it the usual thing for a psychiatrist to prescribe Klonopin, now seen as a "street drug", to an active alcoholic (and the psychiatrist was aware that he was an active alcoholic.)
This information is not only important for me to know regarding my son's treatment, but also for my own, as this man is my own psychiatrist.
Thank you for any input to this question. I have to make a decision quickly about whether to stay in treatment with this man.
Miriam
