Side effects as listed at http://tessalon.drugs.com

What are the possible side effects of Tessalon (benzonatate)?
• Stop taking benzonatate and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately if you experience
· an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
· choking from chewing or sucking on the capsules; or
· confusion or hallucinations.
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take benzonatate and talk to your doctor if you experience
· headache;
· dizziness;
· sleepiness;
· nausea, stomach upset, constipation; or
· itching.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Took Tessalon Pearls (they look like tiny amber bath oil beads)for many years for dry, hacking cough I used to get for up to six months out of the year from a soil fungus allergy reaction. It is the ONLY thing which would stop the coughing. I never experienced any noticeable side effects on it, and I have some pretty STRANGE reactions to meds. This stuff saved my sanity.

I coughed all day, and all night, coughed until my temples throbbed, coughed so hard I gagged. Pulled muscles in my ribcage, threw my back and/or neck out, you name it I coughed so hard. Every year. There were times I would cough for up to 20 minutes at a time, barely able to get enough air to stay breathing until it stopped, but the cough just would not go away. Like a constant dry tickle at the back of your throat, making you cough, but the coughing does not make the feeling go away.

None of the other cough suppressants short of Hycomine (and they didn't like to give a kid too much of that!)ever made the slightest difference in the cough, until we found Tessalon. Somewhere along the line, I stopped being sensitive to the fungus in this way, and have not had the cough but maybe a couple of times in the last decade. Also found out it was partly stress related. The years I was nervous about starting school, the cough was really bad. The one year I was not, I did not get the cough until I ran into a chunk of stress that year. I occasionally still get it if I have a bout of bronchitis at the right time of year for the fungus to be putting off spores. The bronchitis will go away, but the cough sometimes lingers and they give me Tessalon for a month or so until it stops.
