Default Switched from Oxycontin to Methadone

Will start tomorrow. Thing is, my dr. explained the instructions on building up to me and I THOUGHT I understood. I remember her saying that she was going on vacation Thurs. thru Tues., so I guess I can't get much help there.

She prescribed 5 mg tablets and I was on roughly 200 mg of oxy.

Okay, this is what the bottle says:

Take 2-1-2-1 every six hours for 5 days (not to exceed 6 pills), then 2-2-2-2 every 6 hrs (not to exceed 8 pills).

Does this sound right? I know you guys can't tell me how to do it , but maybe just give me YOUR experience and share some knowledge on building up.

Thanks!

I would call your pharmacy, I have no experience with methadone so I cant give you any advice..sorry. But I am sure someone at your pharmacy can help or your doctor should have someone on call for her incase of an emergency so you could try that also. Good luck.

I can't offer much help to you, but I can tell you methadone is like 5 times stronger then oxycodone; idk how much oxy you use to take, but this should probably at least keep you out of w/d's.
You might try emailing MPVT, he's out resident meth expert.

Default Methadone is just a substitute

Methadone is nothing more than a substitute for oxycontin. They give you methadone when you're an addict to heroin, and when addicted to opiates, mainly oxycontin. It's replacing one addiction with another. That's all. If I were you, I'd go to a specialist in the field of addiction. Hope this helps. I hope this didn't sound judgemental, either. I didn't mean for it to.

I know methadone is a substitute for the oxy. Thanks I'm not currently trying to get off opiates. I know I need to, but that is the only thing that helps my crippling migraines and back pain. So for now, I continue...

I have put a call into the dr's office and they do have an answering service taking her calls. They told me the Dr. MAY be able to get back to me today, but since she is on vacation....they don't know for sure. Called the pharmacy. They won't do anything of course except say "call the dr". Not that I am surprised. They won't tell me anything against what the dr. said.

Ugh. I am running a low grade fever now (100 degrees), then to cold flashes, nausea and feeling downright panicky.

Thank you to anyone that can help

Hi Elle: I answered your question's in the "Need to Talk" room...... http://www.drugs.com/forum/need-talk...one-45661.html. Hope this helps although methadone is not a replacement for oxycodone.Oxycodone is a far weaker opiate then methadone.Your doctor probably put you on methadone mainly because it's a far superior pain killer. Also due to a substance in the inactive part of the racemic methadone that is used here in North America the patient does not build up a tolerence quickly like one would with say morphine.Methadone also has few side effects when the patient settles on a stable dose. The euphroic effec t is not there that an addict craves but it does keep you feeling normal while killing your pain.I could go on and on but it really wouldn't serve a purpose.Definately phone your prescribing doctor or pharmacist. At 200mgs of oxycontin a day the conversion to methadone is 30mgs a day.Now this is just a starting point for the doctor so don't be surprised if you need more or less then 30mgs.Also your better off taking it once or twice a day as it has a very so effect and that's why people tend to take to much. They take 10 mgs and look for the "opiate buzz" which isn't there because of the slow action.Unfortunately the addict take more and more until finally they sedate themselves and they fall asleep and stop breathing.SO take the methadone as prescribed and learn as much as you can about it.This is one of the most studied drugs over the last 50 years so there's lots of info.Good luck and let us know how you make out......dave

Thanks so much Dave.

I just am having such a hard time getting to where I need to be. The w/d symptoms aren't as bad as they were this morning, but they are still here. I think I was taking too little this morning.

The dr. DID call me back and she told me to take 2 right away (10 mg) and that I could take up to 7 pills (35 mg) per day to start off. She will adjust my dose after that.

thanks again
