Default subutex vs suboxone

I am getting ready to have my fourth back surgery and then I hope to get off opiats. I have found a doctor that is going to prescribe subutex to start with but we really haven't discussed if I'll be switched to suboxone later or not. We're waiting until after the surgery and after I get off the meds to get into all of it. What is the difference and how addictive are these meds. I don't want to jump from one addiction to another. I've either been having surgeries or in pain management for 6 years, so I have high hopes this time that I can finally get off the opiats for a while at least. I'd appreciate any help.

Subutex is straight buprenorphene, suboxone is buprenorphene with naloxone in it.The naloxone when taken orally doesn't do anything but if you injext suboxone you will go into withdrawls. So it's usually used for addicts that inject to get high. There is no difference in the two pills other than one having naloxone in it.....Dave

Dave,

I am a new member and would like to ask a question. I had a severe neck injury and to make a long story short, abused Norco, better known as Vicodin. I was placed on Suboxone and have been prescribed the drug for pain. I know it's not usually used for pain, but there are some dr.'s in my area, Northern California, who prescribe Suboxone for pain related issues. I was wondering if you had come in contact with anyone else who had been using Suboxone for more than a year? Please let me know. I would be interested in chatting.

Thanks much,
Suz

I haven't been on it for a year, only almost a week, but my doctor told me it's not uncommon to have people on it that long. Also, I have back problems and the suboxone has been great for the pain. Just my two cents worth.
