Carisoprodol (Soma) is a drug perscribed as a muscle relaxent. Like many "muscle relaxents", Soma does not directly effect skeletal muscles, but instead has a sedating effect that results in indirect (via the CNS) muscle relaxation. It is believed that much of soma's effect is attributed to it's metabolization into Meprobamate, a scheduled CNS depressent once perscribed under the brand name of Miltown. Soma is not a federally scheduled substance, but it is schedule IV in many states. It is also habit forming.
