    Default SEEKING ADVICE PLEASE

Hello. My 10 year old son has a seizure disorder called ATYPICAL ABSENCE EPILEPSY. He is currently on the following medications:

    Depakote/500mg 2x a day
    Concerta/27mg 1x a day
    Imipramine/50mg at bedtime
    Topamax/25mg 2x a day

Recently I have been noticing alot of facial tics. As the day goes on it gets worse and by evening its really bad. He has a hard time sleeping and staying asleep. Does anyone know if this can be caused by the meds at all?? We just found out that he has this disorder in January 05 but the doctors think its something he was born with but mis-diagnosed as ADHD and other behavior problems.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    BEST WISHES ALWAYS,
    JENN

My advice is to speak with your pharmacist and ask them about known drug interactions, or speak with your doctor about this concern.

I might not always be right, but I'm never wrong.

My son is ADHD and OCD and was on meds and the doctor told us the meds would increase his ticks. AND they did. They wanted to put him on all kinds of other meds to counteract the tick disorder he was having and my son did not want to take all those meds. Also he couldnt sleep at night when he was on the meds. He is 17 now and does not take the meds he is just trying to deal with his condition, because he hates all the meds that cause more than what he actually has wrong with him. Not that this is an answer to your question. Just to let you know that meds can cause extra problems on top of what he already has. I wish you and your child luck , its not fun having to deal with.

I'm not a doctor so i would ask about this, but the concerta may be the reason for the tics and more likely for the sleeplessness. I used to take it and it never affected my sleep but i was warned that it could since its basically speed (methylphenidate). Like i said be sure to talk to your doctor before changing medications or dosage.
