ok here it goes. I have been clean from smoking pot for a little over a year now. I used to smoke everyday just about, and could smoke bags to myself and not get too tripped out. My last time smoking I freaked out and got really cold and was shaking, a panic attack. Since then I have been prescribed alprazolam (0.25mg) for anxiety, which is generic xanax from what I know. Also I take metoprolol for adrenalin (50 mg). The aplrazolam I take about 4 to 6 pills daily when ever I am tense or feeling anxiety. The metoprolol I take twice, one in the morning one at night. Now I have a small bowl of pot that a friend gave me and I am thinking about smoking it. Just a small hit. I am wondering if pot will have a bad effect on my mind and body and interact with my drugs negatively. Or can I take alprazolam if I get anxiety when I do smoke this pot? I just dont want to die or something, if these meds shouldnt be taken with pot. Thank you for your help

You will find that marijuana, in spite of its bad rap from the government, does not react with most meds at all.

anyone else have any input or information? like you said in your responde weed might not alter my drugs, but I have bad aniexty, say if I smoke some and get aniexty can I take my xanax to calm down?

maybe its truely in my mind I dont know. I have this feeling of me freaking out and having horrible aniexty when I do smoke again, although I just loved smoking it a couple years back, made me so relaxed and just happy, I wasnt dependant on it, just enjoyed it. So I guess I Just want more explanation and reasurance in some form from anyone that can help please. Yes is a pretty straight forward answer lol, anyone else smoked and used xanax to calm down?

I have use xanax and pot together...no problems at all. Just don't over do it and it should be fine. Both drugs are used to calm you and thats what they do.

If you are that worried about it you might want to cut back on your smoking. I know people that get anxiety from smoking pot, I dont, but it makes some people get anxious, and paranoid. The two shouldnt hurt you, I know people that take a lot of uppers then smoke a lot of pot to bring them down. In my opinion thats worse on your body than taking xanax and pot.

Hi- well yeah I don't think you will have any problems, BUT... some background. the metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta blockers and yeah, it does work broadly on epinephrine (adrenaline). The biggest thing you will notice is that it will keep your heart rate down DESPITE the smoking of pot, and with that, your blood pressure- DON'T stand up fast, don't bump up the dose of that one either- it kills. The alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine that is given for chronic anxiety states etc, and for the panic attacks you mentioned. There are however, many drugs in this group that are. The dependence potential of the alpraz. should NOT be under-estimated. Everyone elses opinion aside, and bearing in mind that this is mine (my qualifications are BSW, LLB, MBBS- the first two are boring- don't do them at uni!) you should bear in mind the psychiatric damage potential of the smoking of the pot, which can be quite devastating. So far by my count, you've had to battle to get square and keep it square, are tempted still (but now (more?) cautious?) and are taking two drugs from powerful medicinal groups to treat the problem. I am not sure if anyone is looking at this anymore, but I wanted to say something. First of all, if you are paranoid to smoke pot with a drug at all, the best thing to do is to not do it. Some people can handle it. I,personally, take xanax and smoke everyday along with the opiates I add in there a couple times a week. Some people are paranoid when they smoke pot. The answer is to just not do it. It is that easy. If you really wanted to do it, you would be fine iwth doing it especially because the xanax should help you out anxiety wise.

Let me start by saying that I am for medical pot use. However, in your case I would say don't mix the two. If you are concerned about anxiety after smoking, and that often pot can induce paranoia, it would be easy to take too much xanax. Since all of the medications you mentioned are CNS depressants, your heart rate and breathing could possibly go dangerously low. My suggestion...dump the pot. It isn't worth the risk.

I was a heavy pot smoker until I developed schizophrenia. I finally managed to give up pot two years later and I've never looked back. I'm not an expert but I believe anyone who takes medication for any form of psychiatric disorder or mental condition should consider very carefully before smoking pot again. In your case, you've given it up for a year - well done! Keep it that way, you will be better for it.
