Proscar/Propecia

I have been taking Proscar, along with Cardura, for a number of years for BPH. If I stop taking Proscar for a "better" drug for BPH, should I begin taking Propecia to stop hair loss?Does Proscar work to retain/grow hair, since it is 5 doses of Propecia, or is it only in the 1mg dose that works on hair?
