Default Plz help! St John's Wort Probs/Withdrawals?

Hello -

I am new here and not sure where to post [:I] so I posted on the alternative med site too [?] but am in desparate need of some help if anyone can

I went on a form of St. John's Wort over a month ago for some mild depression and nearly instantly into taking it, had days where I was nauseous constantly. That then turned into messing up my stomach to the point of horrible digestive issues/constipation/cramping etc.along with the nausea I went to see one of my new docs who told me to get off immediately and that she didn't believe in it. (at this point I had been on it for over a month)and not really thinking about it, just went home and stopped taking it like she said. 3 dyas after I stopped it only worsened - horribly [xx(] It has now been over a week ago that I stopped cold turkey (why would she tell me to do that??) and it has been one terrible week....my symptoms only magnified and I panicked. Truly it didn't occur to me that this could be withdrawal symptoms until today when I just started crying for no reason - 3x in a row today!! - I just thought something must be terribly wrong with my body or it is something I have been eating since I have heard that SJW is "harmless" and won't produce withdrawals like other drugs. Has anyone else had trouble with SJW or a similar experience both during and after?? I truly need to know I am not losing it here! TIA

believe, it was very smart for you to not only consult your doctor but to stop taking it immediately! you do recall the nausea startin with you also startin the sjw? it does have a side effect of nausea, diahrea, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue and sensitivity to light. although we all have idff bodies and effects could be worse or added others possibly with our diets and such, especially with natural meds as that. you didnt mention if you were on other meds and if there might possibly be a drug interaction also here?
so sorry your so miserable and i looked for other answers for you to no avail, try callin a natural store or homepathic specialist in your area that may be able to help or answer questions.
also try this web site...

Thank you so much - I checked out a few of the sites and actually posted on one other too. I really appreciate this board and the help here! I just want to be sure I am not losing it and that I should be looking for another reason I am going through all this (food allergy/intolerance etc). It just seems too coincidental though?? I really felt better on the SJW depression wise, but the rest of my body was hating me for it. I feel like I am really trying to recover from some horrible parasite or something I have felt a little better today and last night, I am still scared to eat much at this point. I know it isn't the flu - it was really weird though. I would be fine certain times, and then other times just feel horrible. I could eat great all day, and then it would all just hit. I feel like it may take a bit to get my gastro issues back on track
I wasn't taking anything else with it. My multivitamins from time to time but not daily with it( I am off those too and looking for a new one right now), but nothing out of the ordinary at all. I really didn't feel "bad" when I took it or even shortly after - it showed up off/on - sometimes all day, other times just once in a while out of the blue.
So you have seen/heard of this on SJW before? It isn't just me!?[xx(]

i am sorry to hear about your misfortune. i don't really know if anyone knows exactly how st johns wort works. but i have heard that it has some serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in the blend of "ingredients". there are a lot of disscusions on this site about SSRI (lexapro prozac etc) withdrawal. might want to check it out

just trying to help

Most Homiopathic Remidies Such As The Sjw Are NOT Repeat NOT FDA Regulated Which Means There Could Really Be Anything In Those Pills. It Is A Very Good Thing That You Quit Taking It As You Did And It Sounds As Though It Is Just Going To Take A Couple Of Weeks To Get Everything Back To "NORMAL" Please Make Sure That On The Bottle Of Any Herbal Remidies Says FDA Approved Before Taking Them. Hope You Get Back To Feeling Better.

Thank you. It has been a really hard week I am glad I am off it now too - 2 weeks today that I have been totally off SJW. So, does it just depend on the person how long the withdrawal effects take/last?
