Default Plavix Duration

Is there a time frame to stop taking Plavix? My father thought he would be on it the rest of his life but, one of the surgery techs said no one should be on it longer than three months. Is there any research saying anything about the duration. Thank you for your time.

hi member,
Plavix(Clopidogrel) is used in the prevention of clots. it is used as prophlaxis in patients with coronary disease strokes etc.
depending on what is the indication for which your father has been placed on this drug the duration will be determined. but you are right it is generally not given for a long time & is definitely not the first line therapy. did u discuss the possibility of using aspirin with your doctor?aspirin is safer & can be given indefinitely.
Clopidogrel is associated with the risk of increased bleeding. so if your father needs any new medication or surgery please inform your doctor that he is on plavix.
regards
wanderer.
