Question Percocet vs Dilaudid

I am hoping someone can assist me. I am a 53 yr old male. I have a disease called Arachnoid which is non curable. I have a drug pump implanted in me which dispenses Morphine and Fentanyl. I am on Percocet 10/325 for breakthrough pain 2 tabs every 6 hours. My Pain Management Dr who has taken care of me since 2001 just recently told me that my liver test showed a rise and she needed to take me of percocet because it was causing the rise in my liver enzymes. I have asked her about the possibility of putting me on Dilaudid since I have had this while in the hospital after surgeries and it has been the best thing for my pain. I know it comes in pill form also.
My question is does anyone know of any other drug that I can take that would do the job jet does, contain acetaminophen since this is the part of all these meds, like, Vicodin, Tylenol #3, etc. I am looking for a drug I can talk to intelligently with my Dr on Friday when I go in to get my triplicate refill.
I thank you all in advance,

Michael Scott

I'm sorry that you are having to deal with Arachnoiditis. I happen to be kind of familiar with your condition. I know it effects the arachnoid lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord causing inflammation. This in turn causes chronic pain in the lower back and lower extremities primarily but it more severe cases it can affect the entire body. This is a painful condition.

There are so many different pain med combinations that can be used. Out of curiousity has methadone ever been mentioned? I realize the pain med pump is used where methadone would be used but just wondering if the methadone was ever suggested.

For breakthrough pain you want to stay away from the medications with tylenol as these do affect the liver enzymes. You might want to ask the pain dr about roxicodone. It comes in either a 15mg or a 30mg pill and is oxycodone without the apap or tylenol/acetaminophen. This is used more often than is dilaudid for breakthrough pain. I would think the pain dr is probably considering roxies already considering your situation. That would be what I would bring first up at least. I have personally used roxicodone and it is a strong instant release medication. Let us know how you make out with this. Good luck and God bless.
