Default Oxycontin Question

How does oxycontin work? If it is extended release, does that means it works all throughout the day? If you took it at 6pm for example, how long would the pain relief last for most people? Are you supposed to take it early in the day? Is it just for convenience, so people don't have to keep taking pills all throughout the day, or is it stronger or what? When I got my wisdom teeth out one year, I was given oxycodone to take all throughout the day for 3 days... not that I'm worried about it now or anything, but why wouldn't they just have prescribed oxycontin... is it just mored abused that immediate release?

OC is extended release, most people find it works for 8 hours not 12 as claimed, it releases about 40% immediately then the rest 4-5 hours later. Is it stronger then oxycodone IR, no, taking two 10mg Percocets equal one 20mg OC but you have to factor in titration. Oxycontin can be stronger since it's available up to a 80mg dose, whereas, oxy IR only goes up to a 30mg. It's prescribed for chronic pain, not short lived acute pain (PRN).
