My doctor prescribed me Oxycontin 5mg & 10mg. I know that the 10's are long acting lasting 12 hours, are the 5's long acting as well or are they short acting i.e 6 hours? He also prescribed me percosets, I take those if I have to go out because I can drive with those in my system as weird as it sounds.

I take 1 to 2 percs a day if I am out, my wife works 6 days a week and I like to take her out just so she can get out a relax. But if I don't go anywhere I take either the Oxycontin 5mg or 10mg depending how bad my arthritis pain is.

I should mention that I have osteoarthritis in 60% of my body (my knees, hips, back, hands & feet).

Oxycontin doesn't come in a 5mg pill, it must be Oxycodone IR (Immediate release) as your percocet is, the difference is, it has no acetaminophen in it. Oxy IR and percocet both last for 4-6 hours.
That is weird, an IR pill hits you much harder, whatever.

What is says on the bottle I got for the Oxycontin 5mg is:
Oxycontin 5mg
Oxycodone HCL CR 5mg
BL-LT/RND/CDN(5)

Update!!

I just spoke with my pharmacist and the Oxycontin 5mg is a controlled release. She said that it is new on the market. My arthritis specialist never heard of it, he only thought that lowest dose was 10mg. It does last aprox. 12 hours.

Indeed you're correct, I didn't see that you were from Canada, the 5mg is new to Canada only, I knew there were new strengths out (15, 30, 60mgs US only), but I didn't hear about the 5mg Canadian.

How do people get high off of Oxycontin ( I'm not looking to get high). The first time I took it I felt like a zombie, now I'm used to it. I definitely don't get high off of it. My arthritis specialist gave me 5mg & 10mg plus 6 refills of each.

He is retiring next month, but the good thing is that he wrote a letter to my GP explaining to him what he prescribed me. I saw my Dr and he got the letter, so he said that I don't need to see another specialist, my Dr can keep giving me scripts for Oxycontin.

My goal is to lose enough weight where I can stop these pills for now. I don't want to become an addict, I have enough problems. This site has been so wonderful what with the very helpful members who do not judge you because you are on narcotic painkillers and the useful info here as well.

They either chew it up which turns it into immediate release, or they crush it up and snort it.

I found out that one of my neighbors that lives in the same apartment building is taking Oxycontin and chewing them. What are the long term problems with chewing Oxycontin's?

when you chew or snort oxy you get the whole dosage from an extended release pill in one go. for me my body just got used to this instead to the point where i would snort 20mg just to stave off the cravings, then need to do the same a couple of hours later as the first signs of wd came..in the end i just think your body needs more and more to the point where its never enough, you nod off or forget how many or how often youre taking them.
I dont think there are too many studies of long term chewing or snorting cases as your body gives in before your addiction is satisfied, so the lack of test subjects are a tragic but inevitable result..
Your friend needs help, plain and simple.depending on budget and determination, there are treatments ranging from cold turkey to rapid detoxification with certified doctors or maintanence/tapering options..Check out these forums or google opiate dependency treatments..The one that worked for me was rapid detox here in California, but there are success stories regarding all the choices i mentioned..good luck

First of all Any schedule 2 narcotic is not Refillable. Snorting pills is a way that you get the effect almost immediately. But if you crush and snort dont do anything under 40mg. because its mostly starch. The best pill I ever snorted was a 100mg MSContinWoW You got drips almost an hour after doing it. I of course dont recommend doing this to anyone as I was a terribly out of control Prescription drug addict.I have disc and nerve problems in my lower back and take 2 sboxone,3 ultram and 2 lyrica a day. They take care of the pain and I function fine.Everybody if you start taking any form of Oxycodone you will become addicted!Ask your doctor for the pills I mentioned above you will be far better off.Also If you have LEGITIMATE PAIN theres nothing wrong with taking meds for it justtake it for the PAIN not the HIGH and you will be fine.

I take the Oxycontin as prescribed, 1 pill every 12 hours with a glass of water. I do have one question though, how long do oxycontin actually last? I have noticed that after 8 hours my pain starts to come back. I usually take another one after 8 to 8.5 hours.

My specialist prescribed me both 5mg and 10mg with 6 refills on both. The reason why he gave me 6 refills is because he is retiring. I am going to see him next month because I have been having horrible pains in my back plus I have noticed that when my back is killing me that I am shorter.

The reason why I noticed that I am losing height is because my wife works mornings and she is usually up at 4:30am. I cannot sleep at night cuz of my arthritis pains, so I stay up then when she gets up I make her breakfast. Then when she leaves for work I try to sleep. When she gets up we almost see eye to eye (I am normally 6" taller than her). One morning she measured me with a tape measure and my height was 172cm. My driver's license says that my height is 175cm. So when my wife gets home and after I have slept, she takes my height again and I am 3cm taller and I can see over her head.

Getting back to Oxycontin, what would happen if I chewed a pill? Would it kick in faster like an Oxy IR or is that dangerous? Before anyone screams at me, I would never chew them. I have enough problems with out becoming addicted to these.

OC really only last 8 hours, not the 12 as advertised, the President of Purdue lost his job over making this false allegation, but PF still hasn't updated this or any of their statistics in their monographs. Most doctors know this though, but still like to use the q12h as an excuse not to bump.

I have a question regarding oxycontin. I am still taking the 5 & 10mg oxycontin. What I have been doing lately is breaking them in half, then taking the pill afterward. Is this a bad thing? I am currently taking 2 of the 5mg everyday and 1 10mg at night. I am thinking about taking half of a 5mg oxy before going out. I am also taking percocet 5/325mg at 2x a day. The percs make me tired when I take one so I can't take it before going out.

Breaking the pill really does not do anything. Are you concerned with it hurting your health? or Not relieving your pain? Another thing, unless the pill is extended release it really does not matter if you chew it or remove the color coating. The amount of time it really takes for your stomach to dissolve that coating is ridiculously minuscule. Many people think that the outside of the pill is what makes the pill extended release, but it is in fact altered chemically. Now the pill may not last as long and may hit you harder, but it does not make it work differently, or harm your liver anymore. The only reason i can think that you get sick/tired from percocet is the apap. The oxy and percs are the same thing only one does not contain a buffer. Taking the oxy orally is the best way to satisfy your pain because the bio availability is like 60-90%. The only reason people snort it is for the rush. Some people react differently to snorting the pill making the BA extremely varied. It has like an average of like 50% i think though. Shooting it you get BA of near 100% of the drug. My advice is keep taking what feels right and consult your DOCTOR on what doses are safe for YOU. If I took 120 mg of oxy right now i would be messed up but functional. You on the other hand could have a really bad day, week, or life. You sound like you are playing it safe though so I think your plan is ok for now. Chewing would be a better way to get immediate release because you basically just did most of your stomachs job for it. So if you are aching real bad you could chew a safe amount of oxy and feel better faster hopefully. But do not chew all the time because your meds would not last as long, your tolerance would go up, and the euphoria would really set in depending on the dose. That is what makes driving, working, and even walking dangerous while on an opiate such as oxy. Your head feels good, you relax, and feel like you are "unstoppable". Which basically means you do not think rationally, take great risks, and engage in useless confrontation. Although the euphoria may make you forget about pain and be able to work more efficiently the slightest trigger could set you off in a place of high stress like that (trust me). That is if you do hypothetically abuse (possibly accidentally) the drug in this way and have these symptoms. Stick to what you feel is right, ask for something with less apap, and do not start taking unnecessarily high doses. You'll know why when not only your back, but your legs, arms, head and stomach start to hurt. Withdraw is sometimes (usually) worse than the pain the pills treat. -Dan "Ex-User, Abuser and Loser".
