My doctor tells me that morphine is 1000 times stronger than duragesic but I could have swore that I read that duragesic was stronger.Does anybody know for sure?Please help clear this up for me.Thanks very much. Brown Eyes

he's got it backwards. mg for mg fentanyl (the opiate in duragesic patches) is MUCH more potent than IV morphine, w/ fentanyl being active in the MICROgram range. Beyond that, oral morphine is considerably less potent than IV, w/ approx a 30% loss of the product compared to an equilivant IV dose (orally morphine is active around 5mg). The duragesic patch is a controlled Time release transdermal delivery system, and I'm not sure how effective it is in getting fentanyl into your bloodstream or how much it releases at a time, but the active ingredient is much stronger than morphine.

Fentanyl is stronger than morphine. Duragesic patches are fentanyl, and they come in diffent strengths from 25 mcg. per every 72 hours to 100 mcg. every 72 hours. Fentanyl also comes in the form of a small 'lollypop' for cancer patients (in much higher doses).
Morphine can be strong also, depending upon how many mg. is prescribed. It also comes in sustained-released capsules called oxycontin or Kadian.

oxycontin is not morphine, it is oxycodone which is more potent at comperable oral doses. continious formula morphine is called MorhineContin, Avinza or Kadian

Actually your Doctor probably meant to say that duragesic is 1000 times stronger than morphine as this is the fact.
