Default Metoprolol Side Effect Long term?? Urgent, Help

Hi, all. I am really worried about my grandmother, she has heart failure and was prescribed Metoprolol to bring down her blood pressure and what not. Now she had a history of wheezing prior to the drug, but as she was taking the drug she was experiencing bad breathing problems, she took the drug for a little over a month with bad breathing until the doctor told her to stop. Now i look on these sites and I see that as soon as you have breathing problems it says STOP immediately and consult a doctor. SO she took the drug with this side effect for over a month. Well that was 2 months ago, just a couple weeks ago its gotten really bad, its hard for her to sleep at night cuz its a struggle to breath, i think this is bronchospasm. With excessive mucus at times. Sometimes its better sometimes its worse, she never had this until she took this drug, Has the damage been done and now is a long term affect, has anyone had any experience with this drug or about bronchospasm? any information at all will be helpful. Thanks Please respond

I took toprol xl for about three or four yrs and had the same problems. Most beta blocker can cause brathing problems. I think as the med wears off and is out of your grandmother's system, she will get better. It took about six months for me to get back to norma, but i was on the med a long time.

The reason the dr prescribed the beta blocker is dueto heart failure and bb slows the heart beat and lowers the blood pressure.

I hope your grandmother feels better soon. Is she taking another bp med?

The wheezing that occurs with metoprolol stops very shortly (less than 24 hours) after the drug is discontinued. Usually only those people with reactive airway disease will get broncospasm from this class of drugs. If she is still wheezy and have problems sleeping, she need to to get 2 things checked. 1. Is the wheezing related to heart failure or 2. Is her lung disease being properly managed with appropriate drugs. The fact that she has hypertension, puts her at risk for heart failure, so she need to have this checked out to see which is the problem. I am a cardiac ICU RN, so I am familiar with these problems. Good luck.
