Default methadone dosing??? why so high??

Can anyone tell me what the general dosing method is for methadone for doctors/clinics??

I feel like every thread I have read says that people start on 8o-100 mgs when they switch to methadone from oxycontin/opiates... isnt this way too high?? I know that people in legitimate pain will be dosed differently..

I started taking methadone by accident when I brought some on a trip overseas in case I ran out of Oxys (which I did). I did not have any DR or clinic telling me what dose to start at.. i had no experience with methadone at all so I took one or two 10mg pills per day at the most! i felt fine never had any w/d symptoms... and I was taking 320 mgs of oxycontin per day which is relatively high right?

Im only asking because I feel like withdrawals are alot due to anxiety and mental issues that we cause ourselves, so when a clinic tells us we should be on 100mg of methadone we feel "sick" if we take 80mg that day.

Does anyone else have experience with this? Or agree with me? I'm not trying to be judgemental in any way toward people on high doses. Rather, I want people to know that they CAN taper themselves down if they can beat the mind-games that withdrawals cause us...

Has anyone else started themselves on methadone and were fine on a lower dose? Some people have told me that clinics purposefully dose you high to keep you coming back... any input?

Default

I was on methadone and w as brought up to 80 mgs. Just because thats the dose they said was the proper dose. I knew others on crazy doses over 200. Don't know if I needed 80 or not or what the motivation was for putting me on that dose. For the first couple of weeks, it got me high, then it didn't anymore as I adjusted and built up a tolerance. It made me normal but I never ever needed more. In fact, after several years, I had them start decreasing my dose. I went down as low as 20 mgs. and really didn't notice a difference. I always believed the people who said they were "sick" if they didn't have a dose first thing in the a.m. or didn't get a full dose for some reason were more feeling sick psychologically though you can never speak for another person. I just know how it was for me. But, yes, cali, I do agree with you. In a clinic setting they do dose too high I believe. But I also don't believe its an easy thing to come all the way off either. I think to do that you need some major help, i.e., subutex or VERY VERY slow detox.
