Smile Long term side effects on Gaberpinten!

I've had a fusion back surgery 10 months ago and due to some numbness I developed in my leg 6 months ago, my surgeon gave me Gaberpinten to take for a total of 900mg daily.... I stopped it on my own after a while because I started feeling feeling better and also because I don't like to take medications. My Neurologist didn't advise me on doing that since I started feeling the numbness coming back few weeks later after I stopped it and assured me it's safe to take it for a long term.
I"m really concerned about the long term effect of taking this medications! Does anyone know if there are any long term effects? If so what would that be?

Are there also side effects like weight gain? I found that it's so hard loosing weight nowadays, I don't know if it's relating to taking this or not! I'm not taking anything else other than Tylenol for headaches when needed and Synthroid also Diovan for my HBP which is very low now for a long time and I would like to stop it too but my pcp doesn't advice me to do so...

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Thanks..
