| | long term percocet vs oxy er hi, Ive been on percocet 10 325 for the last year and smaller doses before that, back probs started 8 years ago, i have 2 pinched nerves, and 1 bulged disc, and deg. disc disease runs in my fam. my dad has had 4 surgeries, 3 of my brothers have had it, and i don't like there results. i prefer to hold off till med procedures are more advanced, or i find the right Dr that i trust. i live in north fl, have been to Dr. Eric Scott, and he diagnosed me and i have annual check ups, but I'm starting to wonder if there is an alternative. the percocet is great, but when i take it the first hour I'm "high" in a way and after 3 hours its wearing off and i take 3 a day. i hate this up and down. i have a friend that is on oc 40mg twice a day and he said its so much better than percocet. I'm asking is there any advantages to Roxy er, or should i stay with percocet. my general Dr. is having tests done on my liver next week, he said it will damage my liver from the Tylenol. should i consider changing to Oxycontin, or just oxy er? and also, im young, I'm 21. but i understand addiction, and can control it. the pain is what i cant control, i take one when i get up and at lunch and one at 6. i work 70 to 80 hour weeks as a mech, and do allot of heavy work, i have adjusted my life to deal with it, but i really wish there was a more mellow pill, that i take once a day or so, they will effect me the same all day. this is the first time Ive really asked anyone outside of fam, but i just want professional help form ppl that know what this stuff is all about. thanks, lee. |

| | I'm not a doctor or an expert but I have recently had all those conversations with my spine doctor and have recently had a micro discectomy for a herniate disc.
Firstly if you are only taking 3 percs (10 325) then you should not have to worry about liver damage. The recommended daily limit for Tylenol is 4000mg - more than 4 times what you are taking. Also, some people think that the combo of oxycodone and tylenol works better for pain than oxycodone on it's own. I don't think that but my doctor does. Oxycontin is just a brand name for oxycodone extended release. Basically it is designed to be slow released over a 12 hour period.
You can also get oxycodone instant release on it's own with no tylenol which is what I have been taking.
If you are only taking 3 percs a day and that is working for you then maybe there is no reason to change.
I tried oxycontin changed back to the instant release. For me, it didn't last anywhere near the 12 hours it was meant to and it takes an hour to start working which for me is along time if you are in pain. It is also really expensive in comparison to the other generic oxycodone products. Also, if you take it at night it will be releasing drugs into you system when you are asleep which again seems like a waste to me. For some people, they like the ER products and have an IR pain med for what they call "break-through pain".
I personally like to be able to control my pain with a little precision - If I'm in pain I can take another 5mg and take less if the pain isn't too bad.
As for being able to "control addiction", I don't think this is down to how strong your character is. It's simple science, if you take an opiate for an extended period of time you will build a tolerance and need to increase your dose. If you ever decide to stop you will have to go through withdrawal. This isn't a concern obviously if you plan on never getting surgery and want to control your pain with pills for life.
If you don't like the "high" there are other opiate pain meds that effect people differently such as tylenol 4 (codeine) and vicodin (hydrocodone). Both are weaker than percs and for me produce less of a "high". Everyone is different though.
You should discuss your concerns with you doctor. I doubt they will just let you change to a different med on request if they don't think it's right for you. |

| | i see where your coming from, but i think perc is instant release, because i find myself in pain 1 to 1.5 hours before my next dose, idk, still tosing around the idea of the "perfect pill" that controls pain all day, and i dont have to take it and fell great, then high, then great, then the pain comes back, then, ******** it hurts, and i have an hour before the next dose, but my dr has me concerened about the tyl, he said if i take my dose an hour early it myght damage my liver, so waht am i doing taking it around the clock for years? and the surg, im avoiding it because i have a rare type of degen disc diesease, and it runs in the fam, they discovered it with my dad, when his 5th surg failed, and he is worse than ever, taking 4 80mg oc's a day just to live. im young, and dont want to end up like that. i would rather fight with adiction than not be able to see my son grad. so i think when i go to the dr. next week imma ask ab the hci, its what ive heard is the best, atleast for ppl in my shoes, that are after the perfect pill that makes you normal. |

My suggestion would be to try and find alternatives to these opiates. As the drugs get stronger (or better), the evil monster inside of them get's bigger and stronger. Trust me on this, I started with Oxycodone, and ended up with Dilaudid, MS Contin, Fentanyl... Not cool, not at all. Finally, after nine years of surgeries and pain, I had enough and reduced my pain medication dosage. It took me nearly 2 years before I felt as if I were close to human again. I will never go down that path again. Take Ibuprophen and Tylenol combined, you can take up to 4,000 mg Tylenol and 2,400 of ibu a day, but it will tear up your stomach sooner or later. That is far better than going down the opiate highway to hell. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
