Default Long Term Painkiller Question

Hey everyone I was wondering since everyone is always talking about being addicted to narcotic painkillers, if anyone knew what a few common diseases or reasons why they are prescribed LONG TERM. I know that if you have say a root canal you may get some percocet, but i am talking about reasons or causes why someone would get prescribed hydro, oxy, morphine etc. for a very long time and/or the rest of they're life. I know it has to do with chronic pain ( pain which is always there and does not go away ) but I am wondering what are the names and types of some of these diseases. Thanks

anonone17:

Your question has no simple answer. Dosage and length of drug treatment depend on an infinite number of factors.

If it's medical info you seek, try this site: http://www.pdrhealth.com/patient_education/index.html

Good luck!

My husband has been prescribed Lortab for years because he was shot in the head years ago. The pain never goes away, but the drug takes the edge off...

No i'm not i just wanted to know if anyone wanted to share why they were prescribed painkillers long term because I am not really aware of what some of the diseases are that cause these drugs to be prescribed long term.

Thanks!

Any disease that causes chronic pain and intereferes with ones quality of life is what doctors generally go by.That's just one part of how they make their decisions on when to prescribe opiates. It's a big decision to put someone on long term opiates because there is always the risk of addiction. So you have to have legitimate pain that has been proven to be chronic before a doctor will even think of prescribing sustained release opiates.....Dave

And there are many conditions that can cause the type of chronic pain, that cannot be treated any other way, so people are left with narcotic analgesics as their only option.

Some of these are:

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Osteo Arthritis

Fibromyalgia

Neuropathy

Virtually any type of degenerative bone, spinal, or muscular disease.

Cancers

Muscular Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Multiple Sclerosis

Traumatic Injuries or diseases which have assaulted the body in various ways causing permanent nerve damage.

Phantom Limb pain which can be extremely acute after amputation, and for some, never goes away.

Severe and Degenerative Adult Scoliotic Conditions

Degenerative Disc Diseases

Degenerative Joint Conditions

Migraines caused by unknown factors or injuries that are severely debilitating and limited someone's quality of life.

etc.

Like I said, this is just some of the many conditions that could require long-term narcotic drug use for pain management.

You will find that most people tried all of their other options first, and exhausted them, before resorting to opiod pain management. Very few jumped straight to controlled substances, and as Dave said, you have to have a well documented condition, and have willing cooperated with your doctors, before most of them will resort to prescribing these types of meds.

Personally, I don't see the person who is asking this question as someone wanting methods to seek drugs, I get a completely different impression, it seems to me, though I could be wrong, that he seems to doubt the existence of these types of conditions that could require such a thing.

My information is not guaranteed correct. I do not get them right all the time, but I do enjoy the hunt~

i have degenerative disc in my back and my doctor told me i would prob have to take pain meds forever. they couldn't guarantee any relief with operating. so i chose drugs over the knife. i don't know if it was the right decision but i don't really want to be cut on and there's no guarantee i will get off them. so is there a LESSER OF 2 EVILS? I DON'T KNOW. GOOD LUCK.

I have reflex sympathy dystrophy and its terrible pain. nerve damage in my hand that never stops throbbing, burning, I have hyper sensitivity feels like someone is scratiching the bottom of your foot with a nail. ever see that commercial for restless legg syndrom. they show tacs superimposed on a persons leg. its also like some one has a voodoo doll and randomly stick you with a knife. I had an amputation to my hand along with several reconstructive surgeries. Ive also survived nerve block about 30. injection to your neck where you have to be under anistisia to do. the pain radiates from my finger tips to my neck and in all different combos.I take 6 40mg oxys,400 mg nuerotin, 1mg xanax,400mg wellbutrin. and .25 elavil at nightime. I constantly have pain even with these med and was considering upping my dosage myself but didnt. see the doc again in the beginig of month.
