Or would a switch to another med be a better idea? I have been on Xanax and it is very effective (probably more effective than Klonopin - for me) but made me very tired and out of it. Would that go away with time as my body gets used to it? For me, Xanax would kick in almost instantly and hard but not last very long. It seems like most people are on something like Klonopin, Ativan or Valium during the day and xanax at night or before bed. I wouldn't mind doing that. They (Xanax) give me an amazing nights sleep. How are the Xanax XRs? Do they kick in as hard and fast as the regular Xanax? If you have taken Xanax XR, any feedback would really be appreciated.
I have been on Ativan and it had barely any effect at all. So Ativan (lorazepam) is pretty much out of the question.
What about a switch to Valium? I have never been on Valium, so I don't have an opinion on it or know how it effects me. But I have heard and read pretty good things about it. Could someone who has been prescribed Valium give me some feedback on it's effectiveness, side effects, etc.? Does it hit you hard and fast like xanax and make you as tired as xanax or is it more comparable to Klonopin (which personally makes me a tiny bit tired, but its easy for me to kind of shake off and I feel much more alert on Klonopin than I do on Xanax). Does Valium last longer than Klonopin? (I know it lasts longer than xanax, from what I've read - correct me if I'm wrong)
I would really appreciate you're first-hand experiences and feedback! Thank you. |
I am concerned that you never mentioned what is wrong with you, why you are having to take all the benzos.

Not that it is anyone's business, but we are all pretty open with each other here. Makes it easier to help one another. Take it from someone who has more experience with "all of the above" than you ever want to have. These drugs are all benzos and are VERY dangerous. They are more addictive in my opinion than most ANY street drugs and just as dangerous if not more so as drs pass them out like candy.

If it comes time for you to detox from benzos it is a major serious undertaking. Benzo detox can cause seizures, electric shock syndrome, just a lot of very uncomfortable and potentially serious health conditions. The seizure thing is very real. Had the seizures myself as lots of others have had as well. OK. I won't lecture anymore, I have just become militant about my feelings about benzos after all I have been through with them.
All the benzos have varying lengths of half lifes. This is the amount of time the drug is working in our system. Xanax has the shortest half life, Valium has the longest with Klonopin a little less than Valium. The following link is posted often here and gives a technical breakdown of the information you are seeking on the different benzos. I will elaborate briefly so you will understand and get the answer to your question. Check this link . . .

Xanax works and is out of our system in 6-12 hours having the shortest half life. This is usually prescribed for panic attacks and sometimes to help us go to sleep. This is why you liked the way it worked for you. Klonopin and Valium ... the benzos with the longest half life are prescribed more for general anxiety disorders. These drugs help us to maintain an ongoing steady supply of medication in our system.
Some drs are really into these benzos and prescribe ativan, klonopin or valium during the day and xanax at night. These poor people.

That is how I started out getting into the mess I found myself in. So in answer to one of your questions you DON'T need to be taking multiple benzos for this purpose even though it may sound wonderful. And Xanax XR is just an extended release formulation of xanax. This is sometimes RXd to treat a patient's fear of being in open public places ... agoraphobia. Klonopin is often used as an anti-convulsant. Valium is often used for muscles spasms, general anxiety disorder and is often used in alcoholic treatment during rehab. So each of the benzos are similar but have varying uses even though they seem to be the same drugs and it confuses people.
Benzos are meant to be used for ONLY like ten days at a time. If we have problems where we need to be taking benzos on a long term basis then the problems need to be looked at more closely in my opinion. I am sure you can see how reluctant I am to say good things about benzos. They
DO have a real and positive medicinal purpose, but they are a
NON-STOP TRIP TO HELL if used for too long or in high doses. When I detoxed I was taking 15-20mg per day of xanax along with 6-8mg of klonopin per day. I started out many years ago at a small dose. Everyone builds a tolerance to benzos and we have to start increasing the dose as we develop a dependency. It continues to spiral from that point on. So while I was taking a high dose when I stopped, I started at a normal dose like most everyone else.
If I may ask about how long have you been taking the klonopin and xanax? I hope you don't mind me asking and take the questions the way they are intended. There are often other things you can try that may help. That is why we always ask what a person may be having problems with so we can share suggestions based on experience that might work better for you. Good luck and God bless.
