An individual on this site reports joint pain that he believes might be associated with long term use of Diphenhydramine HCL for the purposes of encouraging sleep.

I have used diphenhydramine HCL over a several year period for the same purpose and am sorry to report that I now suffer from stiffness and joint pain.

I was taking benadryl as a sleep aid for a couple of months and now I have discovered that doing this brings about **severe** joint pain. I quit taking them and the joint pain dissipates over the course of a week or so. Then all it takes is one benadryl and it's back with a vengeance. In the morning after taking it I can't open or close my hands and can barely move my feet or knees or elbows. I'm 46 and don't have any issues with arthritis usually.

I have been using diphenhydramine as a treatment for my anxiety for months now and I, too, suffer from stiff and creaky joints. I don't know if it has anything to do with the pills, but it did seem to get worse after I started continually using them.

I had about a 2 year span during which I was taking Benadryl 4-5 times every single day.I had a horrible time,breaking out in hives constantly.It even cost me one job because I was at the ER in anaphlactic shock.I really never found the cause but had allergy testing and they said I was allergic to 21 foods.I also reacted to just about any drug I took.Personally,I think it was my immune system gone whacko because not long after I was diagnosed with breast cancer.Now I have no allergies whatsoever lol.But I have joint pain so severe that my Dr is thinking RA.So I will definently mention the connection to my Dr.
