Isosorbide dinitrate is a long-acting vasodilator, that means it dilates your blood vessels. It is mainly precsribed for treatment or prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain).
Angina is caused by reduce blood supply to your heart, this drug acts on primarily on coronary heart vessels to cause vasodilatation, thus increasing the blood supply to the heart, and hence reducing the pain.
Its side effects include headache, flushing, dizziness and tachycardia. But most of the time these side effects are well tolerated.
