Post Imipramine...Why Was I Prescribed This???

Last time I visited my doctor, he prescribed me Imipramine for, I believe, nerve pain (rediculopathy) down my right leg caused by a nerve-root displacement in my lower-back. However, upon doing some standard research, I found that this drug is mainly prescribed for depression as it is closely related to S.S.R.I.'s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor).

Strangely enough though, my doctor prescribed one to be taken near bedtime for seven (7) days then two thereafter so I'm assuming that this medication can cause some extreme drowsiness. Is this medication also prescribed for sleep disorders or sleeplessness? The information I looked at didn't state any uses other then depression but DID state that it MAY be used for conditions not listed. I was hoping that someone here could provide additional information or point me in the right direction.

I guess my complaint is that if this medicine is strictly for the relief of my nerve pain (shooting, stingy) then what should I take during the day when I can only take the Imipramine before bed???

Thank you for your time!!!

Default about imipramine!

hi, i looked it up in my book, and i see its conciderd one of the older type tricyclic antidepressants, but it also says its used for many other things.chronic pain, headache, diabetic disease, nerve pain, arthritis, panic disorder, and a few others. doctors would rather try something like this first ive noticed, before putting you on a better med. hope this helps.
