Default I plan on getting off methadone soon.

Hi everyone i am a recovering addict and have been on methadone for about a year now. It really has helped me stay off of other stuff and i am glad I decided to do it. But now I want to be clean from everything including the methadone. I am currently on 80 mg. How long will it take for me to completely w/d without feeling much withdrawal? If anybody has had experience or think they know a roundabout estimate i would appreciate it.

Do you plan to come off using subutex or tapering off methadone all the way to 0. If you plan to use sub, you need to come down to under 30 mg. then make the switch. There are others here much more knowledgeable on how to do that. Also, what do you mean by coming off everything? Are you on other drugs besides methadone? That would certainly make a difference. If you plan to taper off methadone, the main thing you need to know is go SLOWLY. Going from 80 to 40 should not be too difficult at all. I went from 80 to 40 without feeling a thing. You could come down 5 or 10 mgs. every couple of weeks or so. Then I would slow the taper down. Go down 5 mg. at a time til I reached 20 stahying at each dose a few weeks. If you are on the liquid, you can then start to taper by 2 mg. increments staying at each dose for a few weeks. The last 10 mgs. should be tapered at 1 mg. increments, staying at each dose as long as necessary to feel OK, then start missing 1 day, then 2, etc.... You will stiff suffer w/d somewhat, but it is manageable and can be done if done slowly. My ex husband who was on methadone for probably 15 years or so, tapered in this manner several years ago and is drug free still. My friend also did it this way, started going to NA 15 years ago during the taper, and has been both drug and alcohol free since then still involved with his meetings, which help tremendously. Support can never be overstated. It isn't easy to get off meth but it can be done. The fact that you've beeen on only a year is definitely in your favor. People on methadone tend to stay on for LONG periods of time and, of course, the longer you are on, the harder to come off. I was on and off methadone for several years. My advice to every new person I ever met at a meth program was MAKE THE EFFORT TO GET OFF WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, that is mandatory.... So you are good to go. Good luck
