    Default How do Percocet and Hydrocodone compare

    I am caring for my 80yo father who has just come home from a one week hospital stay for an infection in his wrist.

    For the last five years has been taking hydrocodone 10/500 for pain related to cancer and arthritis.

    He has been sent home with Percocet 5/325

    I understand the difference in Acetaminophen dose, but I don't know how Percocet and Hydrocodone compare in relative strength for pain relief.

    If anyone can give me a general impression of the effectiveness of Percocet in relation to Hydrocodone, I would appreciate it.

    I don't know that this makes a difference, but he can't swallow well anymore and I give him his meds through his feeding tube

    sig= write
    pog= by mouth
    prn= as needed

    Idk what T TT means, but oxycodone (percocet) is 1.5 to 2 times stronger then hydrocodone, the 5mg Percocet is roughly equal to a 7.5mg Hydrocodone, so it might not help as much as the 10mg hydro he took before, especially if he took 2 pills before. They should have written him a script for a 10mg Perc.

    yep ... with a 10mg perc he could get away with taking only one. I would call the dr and ask for a different script so you don't have to give him so many pills. Would be lots easier on him taking only one at a time.

    The prescription reads "1-2 by mouth every 4-6 hours as needed for pain".2 percocets every 4 hrs should be fine for him.He'll likely let you know if he needs more.Good luck......Dave
