Default HELP! Atenolol making me very depressed

I have been diagnosed with GAD as well as high blood pressure and have and was on atenolol for almost a month. I have since then developed insomnia, severe depression from the medication, and really feel out of sorts. My b/p has returned to normal now that I am off the medication, and back on accupril which is milder.

Can atenolol make you depressed? I noticed that my mood changed for the better after my doctor d/c'd the atenolol about 48 hours ago. So far, no side affects what so ever. But I am being monitored very closely. My GAD is FINALY under conrol, and I feel ok.

I was just curious to know anything else about ateolol? Side affects? Why I was feeling dizzy and depressed all the time, no sleep?

Thanks.
Robert

I have been on atenolol for 8 years and have suffered depression to the point of nearly committing suicide. From what I know, the drug is a beta-blocker reducing some of the vital neurotransmitters between neurons. This can contribute to, or even cause depression. Read it’s user manual, it will probably give more information about the side effects. My search for other suitable blood pressure meds was unsuccessful.[|)]

I had waves of wanting to kill myself to the point I told my doc this is not a good drug. He has got me down to half a pill and I feel terrible. Does anyone know how long and how you go about decreasing this drug?

Lisinopril is a good bp med if you can tolerate it. I suffered too many side effects.

thanks Lane....lisinopril was suggested as having fewer side effects than atenolol but I guess each person is unique..**smile**

[:I]You are so right. I forgot to mention that i also took atenol 25mg it was the worst, i also took toprol xl it caused severe headaches and back pain. Lisinopril is an ace inhibitor and im allergic to ace and arbs. I now take verapamil & hctz. They are not good drugs to me. My best results came with lisinopril. But bcuz of side effects i had to stop.:=(

I also want to share a couple things. A friend of mine's wife was able to avoid Atenolol by using Hawthorn. Also check out this new device which I ran into at www.resperate.com

I have just been diagnosed as having a slightly leaky mitral valve and also a heart murmur. I am pretty scared after reading all your posts as my doctor has just prescribed Atenolol for me. I am particularly scared by the depressive symptoms as I've only just recovered from a bout of depression and also had a bad bout back in 1995. I am absolutely terrified that I will become ill again from these tablets. I feel I could put up with almost any other side effect apart from depression! Does anyone know if there's other drugs for this heart condition (symptoms are lots of missed heart beats and some breathlessness)apart from drugs which might cause depression? I am going on holiday for a week tomorrow and will not be able to ask my doc for a while, can anyone please help??

Thanks,
Pamela

there are many drugs out there and this does not have to happen to you. just keep a level head. have you started the atenolol yet and is this a cardiologist prescribing this
