propoxyphene is a very weak narcotic, it's use as a prescription pain killer has been questioned for some time now.Darvocet 500=50mgs propoxyphene & 500 mg tylenol.Up here in Ontario they don't even order it any more because of it's uselessness as a pain killer.....Dave

I will have to agree to it being weaker.. way weaker , as in not touching my pain at all!!!! But i found a good use for it once... And this is just me and may not work for anyone else... I was taking about 20 to 30 vicoprofen a day which are the 7.5 vicoden with ibuprofen instead of tylenol.. Anyway my DR decided to just drop the vico and give me darvocet? It didn't work at all but I used it for 2 weeks anyway as it was all I had.. I was happy to find that by using it for 2 weeks before I stopped the narcs it helped me tapper.. I didn't have much energy compared to the vics but that could have been due to my pain....but to my surprise when I geared up to stop and be awake all hours of the night and many trips to the bathroom.. I was suprised to have very little... I didn't sleep well the first night but I did sleep and the rest of the w/d period I slept!!! I did have fatigue but not nearly as bad as stopping cold turkey.. I know some people do not like to prolong the agony of w/d but alls i had was fatigue? This may not work the same for everyone.. It worked so much better then trying to tapper from the drug it self!!!! Theresa

Darvocet which has numerous "me to " versions such as doloxene doxyfene
darvon etc. is a weak pain killer but it stays in your system much longer. It is actually a good tranquilizer and I used it to get off Valium. Yes you do become addicted to Darvocet but it only takes about 10
days to get that under control. This is one of these stories where it worked for me - but its not the best route for everyone to take.

DARVOCET A500 contains
Propoxyphene Napsylate 100 mg and Acetaminophen 500 mg

DARVOCET-N 100 contains
Propoxyphene Napsylate 100 mg and Acetaminophen 650 mg

Info at http://acetaminophen.and.propoxyphene.drugs.com

While the maximum daily dose of propoxyphene napsylate is 600 mg, the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen is 4000 mg. Darvocet A500 contains less acetaminophen than Darvocet-N 100.

Here is the copy of the Darvocet A500™ FDA Approval press release:

WILMINGTON, NC -- September 11, 2003 -- aaiPharma Inc. (Nasdaq: AAII) announced that it received confirmation today of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Darvocet A500™ (propoxyphene napsylate and acetaminophen) for the treatment of mild to moderate pain. Darvocet A500 is the only propoxyphene napsylate/acetaminophen combination product currently FDA approved that contains a lower (500 mg) dose of acetaminophen combined with 100 mg of propoxyphene napsylate, the same dose of propoxyphene napsylate found in Darvocet-N® 100. This new product will provide patients a unique Darvocet formulation with the safety benefits of less acetaminophen and the full power of propoxyphene.

"Darvocet A500 will provide an important alternative for health care providers concerned about high acetaminophen intake in patients suffering from mild-to-moderate pain," commented Dr. Philip S. Tabbiner, President and CEO of aaiPharma. "Because the FDA has established a 4,000 mg maximum daily dose of acetaminophen for adults and physicians are concerned about patients who self medicate using over-the-counter products, we believe there is a significant market opportunity for this dose combination which contains less acetaminophen while retaining the full power of propoxyphene napsylate. This product is a clear illustration of our strategy to bring to market line extensions that make established products safer for patients and patient management easier for physicians."

As previously announced, aaiPharma acquired the product from Athlon Pharmaceuticals. The Company is preparing for an immediate launch to the trade followed by a national launch of Darvocet A500 in October.

Darvocet A500 contains 100 mg of propoxyphene napsylate and 500 mg of acetaminophen compared to the Darvocet-N 100 presentation, which contains 100 mg of propoxyphene and 650 mg of acetaminophen. The Darvocet-N 100 presentation, branded and generic, currently accounts for 95% of the more than $500 million total propoxyphene market, according to Verispan data.
