drugs that are poisonous with alcohol dear members of this site
please give me the names of those drugs which are considered poisonous when used in combination with alcohol as my father who is 50 yrs old usually consumes medicines without a doctors prescription for his back pain and joint pain and he also consumes alot of alcohol
please reply at the earliest -
it would be impossible to list all medications which are contraindicated for use with alcohol. in terms of pain medications however, i can't think of one that is safe for use alcohol.
the combination of acetominophen (tylenol) and alcohol can cause liver damage. the combination of NSAIDS and alcohol can increase the possibility of gastrointestinal troubles. the combination of narcotics and alcohol is never recommended, for obvious reasons. in short, it is not safe to drink alcohol while taking pain medications, but as always, consult your doctor before taking anyone's advice.
try to encourage your father to talk with a doctor about his chronic pain. they may be able to help him with a medication and exercise regimen that is better than what he's using now. of course if he is drinking to excess and is unwilling or unable to quit drinking - that's a different issue, and one that may need addressing as the chronic pain issues are addressed.
wishing you well.
