Concerning part a), if taking the darvocets only when you feel you need them (i.e. the pain is intolorable) and taking them in this way alleviates your pain and allows you to lead a fulfilling and active life, than yes that should be fine to control your pain. If you find that this dosen't alleviate all your pain, and it is interfering w/ your life, than you may want to take them more frequently, as for part b) of your question, I don't think you have much to worry about as far as addiction goes. Addiction is pattern of anti-social behavior (withdrawing, stealing, self-destructive drug administration etc) associated with a dependance on a drug (or drugs). the Symptoms you describe (not getting full pain relief from comperable doses over time) is tolorance, and is aquired through the continued use of any drug. If you can moderate your drug intake, you are probably not an addict, and if you can maintain the Darvocet use you described in your post, you should have little to worry about.
