Concerta is an extended release formulation of Methylphenidate, the same drug as ritalin, methalyn, metadate etc. It is availiable in 18, 36 and 54mg doses. I'm not sure how the release differs from Metadate, RitalinSR or ritalinLA (all are different once-a-day extended-release formulas for the same drug), although the doses in concerta are higher than other brands (which come in 10-40mg ER doses). While I don't know anyone who has been on concerta, I assume that the risks, contraindications and side effects would be similar to ritalin, since the drug is the same, just a different method of administration. I hope this helps. Perhaps someone who has been on both formulations could tell you how they differ in effect.

I know I have spoken to you about ritalin and now concerta, I have custody of my 13 year old brother who has been dignosed with ADHD for as long as I can remember. We went from Ritalin to concerta to straterra. Each at different amounts to see what suited him best. Yeah there are sideffects with all three but that depends on the person and the medication. Finding the correct mg's of a pill is the key. It will take time to get things right. With him he had REALLY bad attitude and mood swings with straterra, with ritalin he "wasn't himself" and conerta seems to be working just fine. he is a happy 13 year old boy for I believe the first time in his life.

I know you were asking about advice for children under the age of 10, but I started taking Concerta when I was 16. I started out on a 35 mg, then I went to a 54 mg, and that STILL wasn't providing the effects it needed to so my Dr. had me taking a 54 mg and an 18 mg together (which was so inconvenient). Concerta decreased my appetite and at about the same time every day (right about when school was about to let out) I would get these severe headaches and the headaches caused me to be very sensitive to light and loud noises. The headaches would make me feel so bad that all I ever wanted to do when I got home from school was lay down. It made me feel as if I was getting the flu. Finally, my Dr. decided to take me off of Concerta and placed me on Adderall XR (30 mg), which is so much more effective. Only every once and a while I get headaches, but they are not near as often or severe as they were with Concerta. This is just my experience with Concerta, others may respond different to it than I did. I hope my information helped you out.
