Default cognitive imairment due to anti-depressants and aricept

My 76 yr. old husband has been on zoloft for over 5 years and felt that it was losing effectiveness and he was becoming more forgetful. The psychiatrist doubled the dosage of zoloft and added Wellbutrin cl (to improve energy) and aricept (to improve memory). Within 2 days my husband was seeing things (although he is blind) and becoming more unstable on his feet. After a week, he discontined the aricept but stayed on Wellbutrin and zoloft.
Symptoms worsend drastically over a week: staggering, complete disorientation in the home, spatial distortion (couldn't keep both hands at same level), couldn't figure out how to put on bathrobe, or how to open plastic bag of apples; didn't recognize a coat hanger; memory poor. etc.
No sign of stroke. Brain MRI normal. Discontinued Wellbutrin when symptoms were very bad.
He seems somewhat improved 5 days after worst of symptoms.
Any insight as to cause of these symptoms and related to drugs??
What type of evaluation other then brain MRI might be useful?

Mayapple,
I do hope you mean that the dcotor discontinued the Wellbutrin and Aricept and not you. Both of these can have serious consequences if stopped abruptly. It does sound like your doctor is trying to figure things out though so keep an open mind.
Unfortunately, there may be something else going on and I'm sure your doctor just wants to check everything before making any further diagnoses. He may give your husband a CAT-Scan and possibly a battery of neurological tests.
Hope this was helpful and I hope everything works out well for you and your husband.
