Default Chronic Pain and Narcotics ... HELP!

Hello.

I've got Kyphoscoliosis, Kyphosis, Degenerative Disc Disease, and possibly a slipped disc in my back (we'll know about the disc problem when I get my MRI tomorrow.) I used to weigh almost 400 pounds, and am now down to 220. But the damage has been done.

My doctor has had me on Percocet (started with 5/325 for about 8 months, then upped to 10/325 about 5 months ago.) Problem is, my pain continues to worsen, even after I take a Percocet tablet. I explained this to my doctor, and he wrote me a prescription for OxyContin 20mg and OxyContin 40mg. He suggested I start on the 20mg and then go to the 40mg so that I wouldn't get sick to my stomach.

I'm not sure why, but when I first took the OxyContin 20mg, after waiting about an hour, I had no pain relief. Half the day went by, nothing. Still hurting. I waited until the next morning, and took a 40mg tablet. The 40mg tablet made me extremely sick to my stomach.

I did some research online, and it turns out that the 20mg pill initially releases 7.5mg of Oxycodone after it is taken. I've been taking 10mg of Percocet every five to six hours. Could it be that my body is used to the 10mg, and the 7.5mg is not enough to treat my pain? Waited again until the next morning, I had breakfast, and I took one of the 40mg pills. Up came my breakfast 90 minutes later.

What other medication alternatives are there to OxyContin? In another forum, someone suggested Oxycodone IR or OxyFast? Has anyone tried these? Do they make you sick? Please help. I'm in pain, and tired of throwing up.

I have an appointment with my doctor this evening, but I wanted to get some ideas first.

Hi --

Ask your doctor about a duragesic patch or fentynl patch if those drugs aren't working for you. Just a thought.

Try taking gravol 1/2 hour before you take your 40mg.Your going to need at least those 40mg oxy's for your pain.Don't be afraid to take the 10\325 for break thru pain that's what thier there for.You won't get addicted if your taking them for pain.Don't worry just take care of your pain.I'm a 25 year pain sufferer so I know........Dave

Oh, I'm by no means addicted, I could take it or leave it. When I visited my doctor he put me on straight Oxycodone Hydrochloride (30mg). Helps for about six hours, and then I either take another one, or if I'm feeling better, I don't need another one. I took one mid-evening yesterday and it worked for about 5.5 hours. Sure is nice to be out of pain, and not sick.
