Hi my name is kev (new to forum)
and i was wondering if anyone can help me out by telling me what if any difference there is between Celebrex and Vioxx?

At this stage this is all i know:
They are both anti inflamatory and anti steriodal drugs and are used for osteoarithris and pain relief and are from the same family.

But are there any significant differences that would make a you choose one over the other or which one works best for osteoarithris?

Hi Kevin: In researching your question I've been able to document the following information. I hope that you find this helpful [8)]

Vioxx is used to relieve:

• Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
• Acute pain in adults
• Painful menstrual cycles

DOSING: 12.5mg & 25mg tablets or 12.5mg/5ml & 25mg/5ml suspension

Celebrex: (Celebrex is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that is used to:
* reduce pain and inflammation (swelling and soreness). Celebrex is a medicine for: relief of osteoarthritis (the arthritis caused by age-related “wear and tear” on bones and joints)
* relief of rheumatoid arthritis in adults management of acute pain in adults (like the short term pain you can get after a dental or surgical operation) treatment of menstrual pain (pain during women’s monthly periods
* reduce the number of colon and rectum growths (colorectal polyps) in patients with a disease called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). FAP is an inherited disease in which the rectum and colon are covered with many polyps. Celebrex is used along with the usual care for FAP patients such as surgery and exams of the rectum and colon.

DOSING: 100mg and 200mg

Vioxx is made by: Merck
Celebrex is made by: Pharmacia

NOTE: Vioxx and competitor Celebrex used marketing strategies to try to differentiate themselves from one another, emphasizing small differences until the advantages became extensive and the flaws appeared minimal. The FDA attributed the competition between Vioxx and Celebrex to insufficient warning to doctors and patients of the serious risks and adverse effects of Vioxx. Arthritis affects 40 million people in the U.S. with millions of these people relying on medications like Vioxx for relief.

Vioxx Worse for Blood Pressure Than Celebrex

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The popular pain relief drug Vioxx (rofecoxib) seems to increase the risk of high blood pressure in older adults, whereas its main competitor Celebrex (celecoxib) does not, new research suggests.

"Several studies, including this one, suggest that Vioxx but not Celebrex is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure," lead researcher Dr. Daniel H. Solomon of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, told Reuters Health. "This is important for doctors and patients to consider when starting one of these medicines."

As reported in the medical journal Hypertension, Solomon and colleagues studied 17,844 subjects 65 years of age or older. During the 1999 to 2000 study period, 3915 patients were diagnosed with and began treatment for high blood pressure.

Vioxx and Celebrex use in these patients was compared with use among subjects who did not develop high blood pressure.

Vioxx users were 60 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure than Celebrex users or people who didn't use any NSAIDs, the drug group that includes Motrin, Vioxx, and Celebrex among many others.

In patients with chronic kidney, liver, or heart problems, Vioxx use doubled the risk of high blood pressure compared with Celebrex.
In an accompanying editorial, Dr. William B. White of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, notes that the investigators have provided "some important insight" into the blood pressure-associated effects of these drugs.

Moreover, he concludes, "great caution should be taken with using Vioxx or any NSAID in patients with (kidney or heart problems), even for short periods of time."

For some reason vioxx increases cardio vascular risk, and celbrex does not appear to. Other than that they are generally equally effective.
