| | Can anyone tell me? I have bad back pain. And sometimes my kness and ankles hurt real bad too. I will not take any norctic drug. My Doctor thinks I have muscle spasims. I dont think he is right, but until we do more test what ever. But anyways He has me taking Ultrims 50mg 2 every 4 hours and Valiums 3 times a day. the Ultrims help, but I need something that is just a little bit better and I think I could deal with the pain that is left. So Was wanting to know is there anything else like Ultrims out there that might be a little better. And the Valiums they help so much. I started out on flexia<<< dont know how to smell it but it was a muscle relaxer. Any way Valiums work but I cant take them but at night because they make me sleepy. And yes I took them for a month so they got in me. So is there something as good as Valuims that will not knock me out? I go back on the 27th so that's why I am asking!! Thanks and sorry it took me so long to get to my 2 questions!

| | Valium replacements Trish, You may want to try low dose xanax 0.5mg or maybe 0.25mg, they also sell xanax xr which is a controlled release pill, but do not crush or chew pill, as it will not work the way that it is intended. I find that you can function during the day on xanax better than valium. Just be careful. Xanax is a very addictive but also very effective medication. The regular xanax will last about 6-8 hours, so you may want to ask your Dr. if it would be OK to switch over. Most people who use this medication take 1 dose A.M., 1 dose afternoon, and double up at night to get good sleep. I find that it does not make you feel like a zombie during the day and you should be able to function great during the day. Make sure you ask your doctor first, before taking this medication. Valium seems to act more like a tranquilizer than an anti-anxiety, and sometimes it will make you feel sluggish in the morning.

Trish | Hi trish
I just want you to know the doctors may tell you that ultram. (tramadol ) is not a narcotic, but it is very addictive you can read on some of the threads here about it...People have a very hard time getting off of it...
And like intelmetal said be very careful with benzo's. Valium is a good muscle relaxer but they are all highly addictive...
Let us know how it works out...

| | Hmm I did not know that. They wanted me to take loratab 10-650 what ever those are, but just hearing the word loratab. I said NO. I got to friends that put that junk up there noses. But I hurt bad and I was just hoping that there was something out there just a little bit better then the Ultrims. And trust me, I got my Valiums refilled, and I take 1 at night no matter how bad the pain gets because I have kids, and I can not be nodding off. To the first poster. I take the Valiums for muscle pain xanx does not help with that I dont think and I want take those. Friends hooked on that junk too. I feel so bad for people that have had pain and had to take that stuff. There has got to be away that they can help them. I mean there are people out here that can sue McDonalds for being fat. The Doctors should not hand this stuff out. But I say this and I might have no chocie but to get something cause in the mornings I cant even get out of bed till I take meds and wait 20 mins then I still hurt all the time! Thanks for that info on the ultrims. |

| | I have had a bad back for years and can tell you that Valium is not the right drug for chronic pain. It sort of works for muscle spasm but if you are in pain all the time you need a better diagnosis.
You should get an MRI and see what's wrong. Maybe they can fix it or prescribe you meds that are appropriate for your condition.
As for pain meds that aren't narcotics, on my first visit, my doctor prescribed me Meloxicam which is in the same family as Ibuprofen but a lot stronger. They also prescribed me Flexeril (Cyclobenzaphrine) which is a muscle relaxant for the spasm. Flexeril is not addictive like Valium. It only makes me sleepy if I mix it with a narcotic, so without, you may be able to take it during the day too |

The only other muscle relaxer that I think works is soma, but that will make you tired also, as far as the pain goes...If the pain does not go away soon I would just take Ibuprofen,It is safe and it works pretty good...
businessman is taking Oxycodone and that is a very strong pain pill.
So don't go there. ...
Let us know how it goes when you go to the doc's
Talk to you soon, Melinda

| | Hey Melinda
The pain med I was suggesting in this case was Meloxicam. It's prescription only but is not an opiate. It's in the same family as Ibuprofen but a lot stronger. This is what I had before the Oxycodone.
I have never found Ibuprofen to be that effective for back pain (or anything more than a headache).
Perversely, anti-inflammatory meds can actually be more harmful than opiates as they are bad for your stomach and can cause ulcers if taken without food and/or for prolonged periods. They do however have the advantage of not being addictive.
The other thing to consider with anti-inflammatory meds is that if you are going to need steroid injections, you need wait 10 days after having ibuprofen and similar meds. |

| | It did nothing for me either - I guess most pain meds suck. Even the narcotic ones aren't that good. tgfsle was just asking about non-narcotic pain meds (I think tgfsle needs more vowels - it's really hard to say!)
I plan to taper. I haven't got a week in my schedule to sit in the bath crying while going through cold turkey (why do they call it that anyway????).
My PA has already filled my diary for next week and I'm not even sure I'll be able to go back to work yet by then.
I am getting my staples out on Wed and plan to start my taper after that.. Scary stuff! |

The term originated in the 1920's It comes from the comparison of a cold turkey carcass and the state of a withdrawing addict.
Good luck on the taper...

I am getting my staples out on Wed and plan to start my taper after that.. Scary stuff! | Yeah I dont want the hard stuff. I have taken loratabs and perks I just get sick on them. But as I said before. I have friends that are bad on pills. So I just don;'t want to get hooked on anything. It's not like they wanted to they had pain got worked on took the meds then wanted to keep taking them even though now they have no pain you know. But yes you are right I wanted to know if there was something like the ultrims that was just a little bit better and something that would not make me sleep. I have really bad back pain all the time. And in the mornings my knees and ankles hurt so bad I cry. So I wake up at 4:00 hubby gets me food and I take 2 Ultrims wait 1 hour and take 2 more then 20 mins after that. The pain is still there but I can get up and get the kids off to school when they go. I take a Valium and 2 more ultrims wait about 15mins and clean the house as fast as I can cause I know the sleepy feeling is coming on. I cant wait to get the mri and get fixed. Thanks Melinda about the soma I have never heard of that so I will ask him about it and give it a try I will spell it to him cause I dont know how that is said so is that how you spell it? Thanks so much for all your help. and May God bless and help all of you that are in need of help. He can help!!!!!! The best way to help is to let him lead you!! But thanks for real!!! O and is soma a lot of money cause I have no insurance so the work with me and try to put me on cheaper stuff!! Sorry forgot to add that!! |
