Default Bactrim Side Effects

I have been using Bactrim DS 3 times a week M/W/F Since Jul 05 and have been dealing with a rash, mainly on the buttocks area, forearms and forehead. It took it about a year to show up after I had been on it for awhile. I know that the med can cause rashes. I have been to the dermatologist and they gave me stuff that has not worked. I tried several otc meds and finally found one that worked. It was the walmart version of vagisil cream. Laugh if you must, but it worked. However it went away for a week or so and then I ate some yogurt which has since brought it back in full force, more worse than before. I have since stopped the yogurt eating. Anyone have any suggestions or have experienced these types of side effects.

Antibiotics can kill off to much of the healthy bacteria in your gut especially with prolonged use. You said that vagasil worked for your rash which makes me think that your rash may be candida/yeast related. Your antibiotic use may have resulted in an overgrowth of systemic yeast/candida which will frequently manifest as skin rash. The rash getting worse after eating yogurt supports this possability. I think you would benefit greatly from using a pro-biotic to help rebalance the healthy intestinal bacteria. Are you on any other meds beside the Bactrim? Or have any gastric symptoms?...Erin

Yes I also taking 5mg prednisone every other day for pulmonary fibrosis which doesnt help matters any. Unfortunately I cant go off either one. I am at a level which maintains my health. My lungs are clear or as good as they will be. What type of pro-biotics are we talking about. This is all new to me. Trying to get a Doctor to believe what you are saying is next to impossible.

I am NOT a dr therefor I cannot diagnose your problem however, my experience and some knowlege in relation to your symptoms and antibiotic use are what leed me to the candida/yeast connection. Please research this. Ask your dr's opinion as well as it is very common knowlege that prolonged antibiotic use can easily leed to healthy bacterial imbalance and your dr should be well aware of that. As to the pro-biotics you should try..You will have to do some research and check with your dr before taking anything else considering your condition. Try a google search on : pro-biotic benefits as well as candida or yeast as key words. Another option: the thread on this site, lexapro withdrawl started by antybiotic has several people who post there who have ALOT of experience with candida problems and symptoms. Those people have posted many liks that you may find helpful. (check out posts over the last 2-4 pages or simply post that you would like info on that subject and someone with experience will likely offer you the links. I wish I could be of more help...Good Luck and I hope you are feeling well..Erin

Thanks for your input. It was very much appreciated. I had a appointment with a dermatologist today about the rash and it didnt help much, so I will see my regular doctor next week and discuss the probiotics. I see that they have different types of food that you can eat and other than taking some pill from a GNC or some other place that seems to be it. Again thanks for your help. It has started me in the right direction.

You are most welcome. I hope this direction yields results at least you would have some answers. Yes, there are many foods that will help to correct the balance of healthy and harmful intestinal bacteria..yogurt is one of them as it contains live and active biffidom cultures. Should it turn out that you have candida...I think it is going to take more than diet changes to correct ...search also pre-biotics as you may need a combo of both pre and pro...you will see the differences between the 2 when you search them. If you would, let me know what your dr diagnosis. Good Luck...Erin
