Default antidepressant drug citalopram and thoughts of suicide?

Hello. I have an 18yr old daughter who was just put on 10mg of Citalopram HBR. I understand there are side effects, but I am terribly concerned about the side effect of suicidal thoughts. Right now she is deeply depressed but swears she hasn't had any thoughts of harming herself. I am so afraid if she starts to take this drug instead of helping her, it will do the opposite. Please if anyone can give me information I would appreciate it. I have heard of Zoloft having this affect on some teens, but not this drug. Again, thanks so much. You can email me...jamag04@aol.com.

Click on the highlighted name Citalopram on your post and it will take you to a link for that drug explaining all about it in detail.

People can have that side effect starting that medication. I would obviously watch her. It also bothers me so many young people are on antidepressants although I know some need them.

They can be over-prescribed but your daughter isn't on a high dose. You can always phone the nurse at the dr's office and ask to be sure. God bless.
