I have never heard people smoking ephedrine, but what I know is that ephedrine belongs to a class of drugs called indirectly-acting sympathomimetic amines that induce the release of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline, causing effects like increase in heart beat and blood pressure and constriction of blood vessels.

Overdose of ephedrine can cause signs like:

Increase in heart beat
Increase in body temperature
Increase in blood pressure
Dilatation of pupils
Delusion
Seizure

The effects of ephedrine are potentiated with the concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitor, so these two drugs should be used together with caution.

Hope this can help.
