Greater-than-normal measurements may indicate:

  • Addison's disease (rare)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Shock
  • Syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion

Lower-than-normal measurements may indicate:

  • Aldosteronism (very rare)
  • Diabetes insipidus (rare)
  • Excess fluid intake
  • Renal tubular necrosis
  • Severe pyelonephritis
