Thyroidectomy may be recommended for:
- increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism; thyrotoxicosis)
- decreased thyroid function (hypothyroidism) with enlargement(hypertrophy) of the gland
- primary cancer of the thyroid
- enlargement of the thyroid (nontoxic goiter)
