Interactions between velcade(bortezomib) and Acarbose (acarbose)

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction acarbose and bortezomib (Moderate Drug-Drug)

MONITOR: Bortezomib may interfere with the pharmacologic effects of oral hypoglycemic agents. Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia were reported in diabetic patients receiving oral hypoglycemic agents during clinical trials of bortezomib. The mechanism is unknown.

MANAGEMENT: Blood glucose should be monitored more closely in diabetic patients receiving oral hypoglycemic agents with bortezomib. Dose adjustment of the hypoglycemic agent may be required if an interaction is suspected. Patients should be apprised of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia (e.g., headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, hunger, tremor, weakness, sweating, palpitations), how to treat it, and to contact their physician if it occurs.
