Interactions between sulfamethoxazole and Cordarone i v (amiodarone)
amiodarone and sulfamethoxazole (Moderate Drug-Drug)
MONITOR: Amiodarone can cause dose-related prolongation of the QT interval. Theoretically, coadministration with sulfamethoxazole may increase the risk of arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and torsade de pointes, because of additive arrhythmogenic potential related to their effects on cardiac conduction. Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim has been implicated in two reported cases of QT prolongation and arrhythmias; however, when used at recommended dosages, it is unlikely to cause torsades de pointes.
MANAGEMENT: Until more information is available, patient monitoring may be advisable during concomitant therapy with intravenous sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and amiodarone.
